Tonight, the Philadelphia 76ers(47-35) faced off against the Miami Heat(46-36) in what was a thrilling 105-104 comeback win for the 76ers.
Philadelphia was trailing the Heat for the whole first half and into the third quarter. However, with a barrage of three-pointers from an unlikely source, they tied the game going into the fourth. It was veteran Nicolas Batum who started the 76ers hot streak, and he would continue to be their team’s boost all the way to the end.
Nicolas Batum Shocks Miami Heat
Nicolas Batum is a 15-year vet in the NBA. The 76ers received him in their James Harden trade. He was averaging 5.3 points per game and 25.9 minutes per game for the team this season. However, tonight, the power forward gave his team a much-needed 20-point showing in 28 minutes.
Batum was the shot of adrenalin that the players and fans needed tonight. He was hitting threes in the corner and it was butter almost every time. He also got the 76ers a crucial rebound and played lockdown defense on the ball tonight.
76ers Team Flatfooted in First Half
Although they played extremely well after the half, they struggled to get started at first. The team only scored 22 points in the first quarter. This would have been fine if they hadn’t followed it with 17 points in the second. It left them down by 12 to a red-hot Miami Heat.
Every player was struggling to hit shots in the first. This can be seen through their stats. Joel Embiid typically averages 34.7 points per game. Tonight, he played 38 minutes and only got 23 points for the team. Tyrese Maxey, their young star, usually has 25.9 points per game. Tonight, he only got 19.
How Will the 76ers Fair Against the New York Knicks
If Philadelphia wants to make it far in the playoffs, they can’t have another start like this. They are going up against a very strong New York Knicks team. Tonight, they were able to rely on a very unlikely source, but what are the chances of Nicolas Batum having another shocking night?
Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey need to be superstars in their next games. Philadelphia should spend tonight celebrating their veteran player for pulling off an amazing game. However, after that, they need to get back in the lab and prepare for Jalen Brunson and the Knicks.
