Bangladesh Register Historic Win Against Pakistan With 2-0 Series Sweep

When Bangladesh arrived in Rawalpindi two weeks ago, not many people were hopeful for them. Despite their impressive performance in the first Test and their collapse at 26 for six in the first innings of the second Test, just a few people predicted they win the series. However, Bangladesh came back stronger than ever to completely dominate Pakistan 2-0 on foreign soil and write history.

In Rawalpindi, Pakistan, on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, Mushfiqur Rahim of BAN  celebrates after winning the second test match against Pakistan. The other subcontinent team, who elected to bat first, swept Pakistan for 274 runs after the first day of the second Test at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Bangladesh Ruins Pakistan’s Efforts

Mehidy Hasan Miraz claimed five wickets for the home side. However, Khurram Shahzad and Mir Hamza’s opening burst left them six down for just 26 runs inside the first 34 deliveries. The visitors found themselves in a dangerous situation. That was where Litton Das and Mehidy’s incredible comeback act rescued the day as Bangladesh faced an embarrassing defeat.

Litton scored a century and combined with the other player for a century stand, leaving South Asians one wicket short of Pakistan’s first-inning total. Fast bowlers Nahid Rana and Hasan Mahmud took nine wickets apiece in the second innings, but Pakistan was bundled for a paltry 172 after failing to capitalize on their little lead.

Bangladesh had a strong start thanks to visiting opener Zakir Hasan. But after taking a few wickets in the last session, Pakistan looked like they might rally. But Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim’s experience saw BAN through to victory and a historic series victory. In the first Test match of the series, Bangladesh defeated Pakistan for the first time in 14 attempts on August 25. A week or more later, South Asians won their first-ever series whitewash against Pakistan and their fourth overall in Test history.

Of those victories, two were against the West Indies (in 2009 and 2018). The other occurred in 2014 against Zimbabwe. This was their second consecutive clean sweep on foreign soil after winning by a similar margin in the West Indies in 2009. After England won 3-0 in the 2022 match, Bangladesh also made history as the second side to complete a clean sweep in a Test series in Pakistan.

The second game was especially noteworthy after a stunning victory in the first Test, which set the tone for the series. Bangladesh was in a risky situation, trailing at 26/6 in their first innings. But, led by Litton Das, BAN XI showed great resilience, recovering from an early collapse to finish with an impressive score. Bangladesh lost 12 of their previous 13 Tests against Pakistan, but Shanto indicated they were more optimistic this time.

“Before we came here we were looking to win,” Shanto said. “The way everyone did their job, (I’m) really happy. The most important thing is their work ethic.” They extended Pakistan’s poor home test record to ten matches without a win. Pakistan’s last home victory was in December 2021 against South Africa at Rawalpindi. Shan Masood has suffered his second consecutive clean sweep after being upgraded to test captain last year, losing 3-0 to Australia.
