In T20 cricket, it’s all about hitting boundaries – fours and sixes. Yashasvi Jaiswal, playing for Rajasthan Royals, has emerged as a prominent India’s boundary hitter. In the IPL 2022 season, he topped the charts, facing 601 balls and scoring 922 runs in 27 matches.
His impressive tally includes 116 fours and 37 sixes, giving him a boundary percentage of 25.45. Among batsmen with at least 500 runs, only Australia’s Glenn Maxwell has a higher boundary frequency.
The Picture Behind India’s Boundary Hitters
Despite not appearing as a naturally aggressive batsman initially, Yashasvi Jaiswal‘s performance in IPL 2023, especially overshadowing his opening partner Jos Buttler, showcased his explosive batting prowess.
With a strike rate of 152.28 in the powerplay, he’s proven to be formidable right from the start. Plus, his ability to maintain momentum even in the middle overs is evident. During India’s recent Test series against England, Jaiswal hammered 26 sixes among his 712 runs, highlighting his boundary-hitting capabilities.
Following closely behind Jaiswal is Suryakumar Yadav, known for his knack for hitting boundaries. He has struck a four or a six in 24.35% of the 542 balls he has faced.
In T20 cricket, having a diverse range of shots is crucial to alleviate pressure. Suryakumar stands out among Indian players for his ability to play shots all around the ground, especially with his trademark flicks and paddles behind the wicket, contributing significantly to his run-scoring.
Yet, players like Rinku Singh and Shivam Dubey have caught attention as strong contenders for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Dubey’s ability to clear the fence in the middle overs, evident from his 57 sixes in 517 balls, makes him a valuable asset, especially on slower Caribbean pitches.

As for established stars like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, their performances in T20 cricket have been scrutinized. While Sharma may not have had prolific seasons recently, his ability to turn matches around with aggressive batting displays cannot be underestimated.
On the other hand, Kohli, known for his consistency and adaptability, might need to ramp up his boundary-hitting prowess as T20 cricket evolves, especially with the T20 World Cup on the horizon.
As T20 cricket evolves, will their approaches remain effective as India aims for success in the T20 World Cup? Only time will tell.
