A Look At WWE’s Massive Global Expansion in 2024

WWE Champion Cody Rhodes Wrestlemania 40 PLE

WWE has stepped up massively in 2024 in terms of hosting Premium Live Events outside of the United States. Currently, they are scheduled to host the most PLEs outside of the United States in a single year in the company’s history. They have already been to Australia in February for Elimination Chamber 2024, where they had an attendance of over 50,000 people.

It’s clear that the WWE is taking a huge step in terms of becoming a worldwide product, and the main way to do that is to host more events outside of the US. In 2024, the company will be hosting PLEs in France, Scotland, and Germany for the very first time and will be returning to other international locations that they have previously been to. This is a look at every PLE the WWE will be hosting in 2024 throughout the rest of the year.

The upcoming PLE the WWE will be hosting outside of the US this year will be their May event called Backlash. The WWE has had their Backlash PPV since 1999, however, this is only the third time the event will be held outside of the US. This year, the event will take place at Decines-Charpieu, Lyon Metropolis, France in the LDLC Arena, on May 4th. This is the company’s first-ever PLE being held in France.

There have already been two matches confirmed for Backlash 2024, both being for the WWE’s World Championships. The Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes will take on challenger AJ Styles, in what is seeming to be the main event for this PLE. The World Heavyweight Champion will also be on the line as champion Damian Priest looks to defend his belt against “Main Event” Jey Uso.

WWE King and Queen of the Ring

WWE’s King and Queen of the Ring PLE will be held on May 25th, 2024, at the Jeddah Superdome in Saudi Arabia. WWE and Saudi Arabia have had a partnership that dates back to 2018, as they hold two PLE events there every year, and will do so until 2027. Saudi Arabia is one of the markets that has increased tremendously for the company due to their constant events there.

The WWE is bringing back the King and Queen of the Ring tournaments, as they skipped it in 2023. The first ever Queen of the Ring winner was Zelina Vega in 2022, and the King of the Ring has been a tournament that’s been established since 1985. The PLE will see the finals of both tournaments, though it is unknown whether the other tournament matches will be taking place at the event.

WWE Clash at the Castle

For the first time ever, the WWE is bringing a Premium Live Event to Scotland. Clash at the Castle is a PLE that was first established in 2022 and was held in Wales. Given the theme of the event, it’s likely that Clash at the Castle will become exclusive to the United Kingdom. This year’s event will take place on June 15th at the OVO Hydro.

It’s expected that Scotland’s Drew McIntyre will be the headliner for this show, considering his main event status. That could be the event where McIntyre reclaims his World Heavyweight Championship from Damian Priest, who cashed in on him at WrestleMania 40. It could also be the PLE where he finally has a match against current rival CM Punk.

WWE Money in the Bank/NXT Heatwave

This year, WWE is holding both of its July PLEs at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Toronto has always been WWE’s most visited location outside the United States, which makes sense considering how popular wrestling has always been there. Money in the Bank will take place on July 6th, 2024, and NXT Heatwave will follow it the next day, July 7th.

The Money in the Bank PLE will crown a new briefcase holder for the men’s and women’s divisions, so it’s certainly considered one of the company’s more important events. Both of last year’s winners, Iyo Sky and Damian Priest, were able to cash in the MITB successfully. NXT Heatwave is the only NXT PLE set to take place outside of the United States in 2024.

WWE Bash In Berlin

The final international event that the company will be holding in 2024, based on what is confirmed, will be Bash in Berlin. This will be the first-ever PLE the company will be having in Germany. The event will take place on August 31st, 2024, in the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Fans should expect to see wrestlers Ilja Dragunov and Gunther on the show, given their ties to Germany and Austria respectively. There have been rumors of Gunther going after one of the two WWE World Championships, and if that is the case, it could very well happen at Bash in Berlin. Dragunov will also likely make an appearance considering his German heritage, and considering that he will be called up from NXT in the 2024 WWE Draft.
