The WWE has worked for over a decade to make the women’s division a formidable roster. With the outstanding talent that has come through WWE, the women’s division is now an exciting place that has produced incredible moments and great matches. It was led by the four Horsewomen: Sasha Banks (a.k.a. Mercedes Mone), Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, and Bayley. Then after them followed Alexa Bliss, Bianca Belair, and Asuka (a.k.a Kana). These women have made the women’s division of WWE into a legitimate force commanding the respect of the WWE Universe.
It Only Takes One
With the women’s division as young as it is and the barriers broken, it only takes one person to unravel all the work done by those pioneers. We have seen it before in the WWE: After the void left by Trish Stratus and Lita, the women’s division was a popcorn/bathroom break spot in the eyes of the fans. With what we saw at Summer Slam, we are in danger of seeing it again.
Nia Jax’s mind-boggling victory over Bayley at Summer Slam leaves many to wonder why. Jax has a reputation for injuring fellow wrestlers in the ring. She has broken Lynch’s nose, separated Bayley’s shoulder, kneed Flair in the head, and failed to catch her in a moonsault. She allegedly got into a shoot (not scripted) fight with Flair, injured Ember Moon, sliced open Kairi Saine, throwing her into the ring steps, and much more.
WWE finally spared the fans and locker room the headaches caused by Jax’s release of her in November 2021. Then, in early 2023, WWE made the head-scratching decision to bring her back. To make matters worse, they made her Queen of the Ring, giving her a title opportunity at Summer Slam, which she won over Bayley in a devastating move for the women’s Smackdown roster.

The creative process in the WWE goes through one man, Triple H (Paul Levesque). He is the one who ultimately decides who wins and loses the matches and comes up with stories to tell. It was his call to put Jax over Bayley even though, time and time again, the fanbase has outright rejected Jax. When Flair, Banks, Lynch, and Bayley all came up to the main roster, the standard was raised for the women. Jax has shown time and time again she is well below the now set minimum standard to be a WWE Superstar.
A championship in professional wrestling is to be held by the best and defended against the best. If that is not the case, then the championship becomes nothing more than a prop and delegitimizes the title, the division, and the company. Triple H has done a great job on the creative end overall, but this blunder is nearly unforgivable. To put the title on someone the fans reject and the locker room is hesitant to work with, the fan rejection is not only national but international.
At Elimination Chamber in Perth, Australia, Jax was given a test run as the main event for the women’s title against Superstar Rhea Ripley. This was a homecoming for Ripley, who expected a hot crowd; however, the Australian crowd was much quieter than expected, and one can only assume that because of the low-quality match, Jax was only able to kill the crowd that hot for most of the event.
How to Fix it
There isn’t an easy fix to this blunder. We can only hope that Tiffany Stratton cashes in her money in the bank contract sooner rather than later. The fanbase will undoubtedly reject Jax as champion once again. It is hard to tell what Triple H is trying to do with the women’s division having Jax as the focal point. But if she has a long reign, the WWE universe will have a nice break to use the restroom or make a snack while Jax is on the screen.
