World Chase Tag: From a Kids Game to an Elite Sport in 2024

12 years ago a sport called World Chase Tag was created. I’m sure a majority of people reading this might remember running around a backyard, playground, or gym chasing their friends around. Your arms are outstretched, and when you finally manage to tap their shoulders, you quickly yell the phrase tag you’re it and start running for your life. This game has had different iterations from the classic tag, freeze tag, zombie tag, and the list goes on and on.

Now, this new form of tag has taken over and it certainly isn’t for recess yards. In 2012 a British man named Christian Devaux was playing tag with his son when he had the idea for the sport. It consists of parkour, obstacles, and intense scrambling. Within these 12 years the sport has grown and is now more popular then ever.

World Chase Tag is played on a square-shaped course called The Quad, which consists of multiple obstacles for players to utilize. All of these obstacles have their own name. It consists of The Sisters, Loading Bay, Front Line, Tilted Cube, Lazy Boy, Ridge, and The Mountain. Each obstacle can either help the evader make a daring escape or help the chaser trap and tag.

Taggers start on the Starting Plate while the evader can choose any part of The Quad to stand. The announcer will then yell “Players ready!” a buzzer will sound and the tagger can start their hunt while the evader tries to find coverage.

The chaser has 20 seconds to make a tag before it’s considered an evasion and the evading team gets a point. The person who got the evasion must then stay on The Quad for the next round. If a tag is made the teams switch off and the chaser is now the evader giving their team an oppurtunity to get some points. If either player steps out of bounce, they lose the round. There are 16 rounds and a possible sudden death if there is a tie

There are currently two teams in World Chase Tag that have dominated consistently. Those teams are Apex Moon and Hollywood Freerunners. Apex Moon also has a great sister team called Apex Sun.

Incredibly, Apex Moon has only lost twice in World Chase Tag. They’ve been competing in the league since 2020 and have remained the dominant team. They have been World Champions and have won the US Championship as well. Their team consists of Jarrod Luty, Michael Sliger, Olof Wood, John Lunsford, Joey Jepsen, and Felix de Rosa.

Hollywood Freerunners are the current World Champions and one of the only teams to beat Apex Moon. They’re known for their very bright pink uniforms and stuntman backgrounds. The team consists of captain Kyle Soderman, Omar Zaki, Dale Smith, Wes Preston, Miguel Diaz, and Amos Rendao

This sport has a lot of room to grow. With more people showing interest every day there is no question that WCT is just taking off. The quality of the events has gotten better each time, and it’s clear that audience attendance is also getting stronger.

As of recently World Chase Tag has created a women’s division. The viewership has grown well and many fans are showing great interest in it. The matches were slower at first as the women were clearly still figuring out the game, but with every tournament they become much more dominant. It will be interesting to see what WCT chooses to add next.
