The women’s sports revolution continued with the announcement of the Women’s Lacrosse League’s first four teams. The WLL is set to take off for their debut season at the Premier Lacrosse League’s Championship Series in February 2025. Full rosters are scheduled to be announced early next year.
Women in sports have been on the rise in the last few years and are continuing to break down barriers. The Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese rivalry has gone from being the most-watched WNCAA basketball game in history to translating to the professional level in the W. The WNBA has never been more popular and it gives young women and girls something to strive for in sports.
WLL 4 Team Locations and Names
The first team revealed on ESPN’s SportsCenter was the Boston Guard. Boston will add the team after having one of the best sports cities in the country. The Guard will join the Patriots, Bruins, Celtics, and Red Sox as they look to add to the loyal fanbase. The New York Charging was the second team presented to the WLL. This was a complete no-brainer. New York is one of the biggest television markets in the world. Already home to the WNBA Champion New York Liberty, women’s sports in the “Big Apple” has never been hotter.
The WLL could easily have their first rival upon us, and they haven’t even played a single match. Smart marketing would pair the two cities against each other to add to the hatred between the two. The Maryland Charm was the third team announced. Though the locations of the teams have not been announced, one would believe the Charm will play somewhere near Baltimore.
The last team that was introduced was the California Palms. This is another move that makes sense when it comes to big markets and possible television deals. Otherwise, geographically, it doesn’t make sense for the start of the league with the other three locations being on the East Coast.
Final Thoughts
Even though I’m not a big fan of the names, this was a great move by the Premier Lacrosse League to introduce the WLL. Lacrosse has been an increasingly popular sport the past few years, and this shows the evolution of it. Ratings in women’s sports are the highest they have ever been. It gives young athletic women hope and dreams of becoming a professional in their given sport. Whether it’s basketball, lacrosse, gymnastics, softball, or wrestling, women in sports are on the rise. It will be interesting to see if, when, and how the WLL will expand over the years.
