Rodrigo Gomes: Wolves Agree A 5-Year Contract For Portuguese Winger

Wolves Agree A 5-Year Contract For Portuguese Winger Rodrigo Gómes

Wolverhampton Wanderers have reached an agreement with Clube de Braga to sign Rodrigo Gomes for five years. Rodrigo Gomes was playing for Estoril last season on loan, where he scored seven goals in 30 league appearances.

The under-21 winger is set to have his medical later this week before signing a 5-year contract worth €15 million (£12.7m), with an option to extend by 1 year.

Despite stiff competition from Atletico Madrid, Wolves moved fast to sign him before next season.

Gomes’ incredible success since he was young has made him an investment and a hot prospect. He has played for the Portuguese team for the under-16 team, and now the under-21 team.

He grew his skill and rose through the ranks at Braga. While at Braga, he made 51 first-team appearances. However, it was during his loan spell at Estoril in the Primeira that he attracted notice.

Last season while at Estoril, he made 30 appearances, scoring seven goals, and contributed seven assists. This means he contributed a goal after every 173 minutes. Despite his young age, he was not too far behind Portugal international midfielder Pedro Neto was able to manage one every 124 minutes.

His key passes per game in the domestic league were 1.7. His successful pass percentage was 75%, with 0.9 successful dribbles, and 0.3 crosses per game.

Rodrigo Gomes Strengths

Resourcefulness is one of Gomes’s strengths. Even though he is right-footed, he can play on both flanks either as a full-back, wing-back, or out-and-out winger. His talent to play right up or down the pitch allows him to play several positions on the pitch, which is an asset for the Wolves because currently, no one else can do that. The fact that he is an exceptional dribbler adds weight to the different positions he can play, meaning he will also perform well.

In addition, Rodrigo Gomes is also a good athlete. His positions rely on speed and quality close control which he excels at. His speed makes it hard for opponents to catch up with him, which gives him the freedom to get the ball to the final third and past the opponent’s defense at his will. His off-ball movement is good and has demonstrated that he can slip away and get in and out of spaces, which is what allowed him to score the goals he did.

Above all, the Wolves seem like they have landed a fine and talented player who can play various positions. Given his age, he has a lot to offer to the team for the 5-year contract signed. Rodrigo Gomes comes barely a year after Gary O’Neil took up the role of coach for the Wolves. He arrived with only four days to the new season. Even though his performance was not extraordinary, he did his best to make the team shine. His move of signing Gomes seems one of his tactics of preparing the team for the coming season.
