Wojciech Szczesny Closing on Barcelona Move

Wojciech Szczesny to Barcelona

Barcelona have reportedly made significant progress in their pursuit of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. The 34-year-old Poland international had recently announced his retirement after leaving Juventus, following a season in which he made 35 appearances and played for his country at Euro 2024.

However, with Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen sidelined by a long-term knee injury, Wojciech Szczesny has been offered a chance to come out of retirement. Over the past week, the Catalan club has been working behind the scenes to finalize his registration as a new squad member.

Barcelona missing out on Marc-Andre Ter Stegen lands them in a situation where they need a prominent keeper in their goal. Someone who possesses genuine quality and is also successful in delivering performances in big matches is what the club requires at the time being.

Wojciech Szczesny quickly accepted Barcelona’s interest, and La Liga has also signaled its approval for his registration. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Szczesny underwent a medical session with Barcelona on Monday, which brought him close to officially joining the club. Romano further reported that Szczesny is expected to be unveiled during Barcelona’s Champions League clash against Young Boys, although he won’t be eligible to play in the competition until after the January transfer window.

In the meantime, backup goalkeeper Inaki Pena, who has only made 33 senior appearances, has been thrust into the spotlight. Pena recorded two clean sheets in his first two La Liga games this season but conceded four goals in a surprising loss to Osasuna. He will start against Young Boys, but it remains uncertain if he will retain his place when Barcelona faces Alaves on October 6.

Wojciech Szczesny Surprisingly Coming Out of Retirement

Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has come out of retirement to join Barcelona. Szczesny was brought in to replace Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper, Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, who suffered a season-ending injury in a match against Villarreal last month. Despite the transfer window being closed, Barcelona was able to sign Szczesny because he was a free agent.

Wojciech Szczesny had retired earlier this summer after Juventus informed him he was no longer part of their future plans. His contract with Juventus was originally set to run until 2025, but the club brought in Michele Di Gregorio from Monza and put Szczesny up for sale. Rather than join another club, Szczesny chose to retire.

However, Barcelona’s offer convinced him to come out of retirement. He has agreed to a one-year contract with the Catalan club and plans to retire again at the end of the 2024-25 season. Throughout his career, Wojciech Szczesny made 252 appearances for Juventus over seven seasons, winning three Serie A titles. He also had notable stints with Roma, Arsenal, and Brentford. On the international stage, he earned 84 caps for Poland before retiring from international football after Euro 2024.
