Wimbledon: Rune And Fritz Break Into The 3rd Round While Tsitsipas Gets Knocked Out

The oldest tennis tournament in the world continued today with eight top 20 players in action. Alex De Minaur defeated Jaume Munar in straight sets. Hubert Hurkacz became the third top 10 player to get knocked out of the tournament after retiring due to injury in the fourth set of his second-round Wimbledon clash with Arthur Fils.

Ben Shelton had a topsy-turvy match against Lloyd Harris, losing the first and third sets before rallying to win the fourth and fifth and book a Wimbledon third-round clash with Denis Shapovalov. The Canadian had squandered a two-set lead to Daniel Altmaier but overcame the German in the fifth set to win the tiebreak.

Holger Rune Into Wimbledon 3rd Round

Holger Rune’s Wimbledon continued today after defeating Kwon Soon-woo in the first round on Tuesday in straight sets. Today, the 21-year-old Dane took on Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild in the second round of the Wimbledon Championships.

Holger Rune started in the worst way possible, falling one set down to the Brazilian, but rallied himself to win the next three sets. In two hours and 10 minutes, Holger Rune broke Seyboth Wild’s serve five times across the three sets he won to win the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.

The farthest Holger Rune has ever gone in a Grand Slam tournament is the quarterfinals in the 2022 and 2023 editions of the French Open and the 2023 Wimbledon. After his win over Seyboth Wild, the Dane is two wins away from another Wimbledon quarterfinal.

It was good. The first set was difficult. He played very freely, didn’t make many mistakes, and put me under a lot of pressure. So definitely I had to adjust on a few things, but I did, and I improvised. So I’m happy with the victory.”

Holger Rune will face 27-year-old Frenchman, Quentin Halys in the third round of the Wimbledon Championships on Saturday.

Taylor Fritz Continues Fine Form On Grass

Taylor Fritz has continued his fine grass court form in the Wimbledon Championships after winning his third Eastbourne International title on Saturday. After needing three tiebreaks in two matches to get to the final, the American won five consecutive sets without needing tiebreaks including the first round of Wimbledon.

His second round Wimbledon clash against Arthur Rinderknech wasn’t as routine as the first round clash with Christopher O’Connell. The American won the first two sets 6-3, 6-4, but dropped the second set to his Australian opponent. However, Fritz rallied his wits back around himself to win the fourth set 6-4.

While Taylor Fritz was picking up his Eastbourne International title, new Chilean No. 1, Alejandro Tabilo, was picking up the Mallorca Championships. Both champions will face each other in the Wimbledon third round after the Chilean defeated Flavio Cobolli in the second round. Tabilo needed to come from two sets down to win the tie in five gritty sets.

Tsitsipas Suffers Upset In Wimbledon

Meanwhile, Stefanos Tsitsipas became the next big player to get knocked out of Wimbledon after Andrey Rublev, Casper Ruud, and Hubert Hurkacz. The Greek No. 1 and world No. 11 had defeated Taro Daniel in three sets in the first round, needing a tiebreak in the first set.

The fourth round is the farthest Tsitsipas has ever gone in Wimbledon and after losing in the second round to Emil Ruusuvuori, the Greek will need to wait until next year to try to equal that personal record.

Emil Ruusuvuori showed resilience against Tsitsipas, defeating him in two tiebreaks before the Greek rallied back to win the third set. This didn’t seem to slow down the Finnish star and he stepped up his game in the fourth set to serve out the match for a place in the third round.
