Road To Wimbledon Final: Novak Djokovic to Tie Federer’s 8-Title Record?

UFC fighter Dustin Poirier makes bold claim at press conference

Novak Djokovic has been the most dominant player in tennis in the last decade. From the 2014 Wimbledon Championships, the big Serbian has won 18 of the 39 Grand Slam tournaments played in that time.

Before the 2014 Wimbledon final, Djokovic had won seven Grand Slam titles, behind Rafael Nadal’s and Roger Federer’s 14 and 18 respective titles. In the 2023 Australian Open, Djokovic equaled Nadal’s record as the male player with the most Grand Slam titles.

In the French Open of that same year, the Serbian broke the record and extended it with the US Open, his 24th Grand Slam title. Roger Federer set the record of the most decorated Wimbledon champion in 2017 with eight titles and with Novak Djokovic’s 2022 title, the Serbian is one title away from equalling Roger’s record.

Novak Djokovic Defeats Musetti In Semifinal

Novak Djokovic and Lorenzo Musetti had kept each other on their toes until the sixth game of the first set when the Serbian opened a two-set point lead on the Italian’s serve. Both players then engaged in an exciting rally that kept the crowd in “oos” and “ahs” until Djokovic forced an error on Musetti’s forehand.

In the ninth game of the set, the Italian’s forehand forced Djokovic off the court just enough to open up space for him to fire home a winner down the line and steal a break back on the Serbian’s serve. Novak Djokovic opened up two set points on Musetti’s serve in the next game and took the set 6-4 when the Italian’s attempted drop shot hit the net.

Musetti started the second set with a backhand winner to break Djokovic’s serve. However, despite once leading 3-1 in the set, the Italian found himself fighting in the 12th game of the set to force a tiebreak. The tiebreak was relatively straightforward for Djokovic.

By the time Djokovic won the break of Musetti’s serve with a backhand crosscourt volley in the first game of the third set, the game was done and dusted. Both players were confident in their serves after that, with sublime serves pulling Musetti out of a three-set point ditch on his serve in the ninth game.

However, Djokovic won’t be denied. The Serbian came from 0-30 down in the 10th game to serve out the match to defeat the Italian in straight sets 6-4, 7-6, 6-4. Novak Djokovic will play in his 37th Grand Slam final on Sunday against Carlos Alcaraz in a repeat of the 2023 Wimbledon final. It’s also his 10th Wimbledon final, winning seven of them.

Well, I’ve said it many times. Wimbledon has always been a childhood dream for me to play and to win it… I was a seven-year-old boy in Serbia watching the bombs fly over my head and dreaming of being in the most important court in the world, which is here, the Center Court of Wimbledon.

Djokovic’s Road To The Final

Novak Djokovic returned from a knee injury to play qualifier Vit Kopriva in the first round of the Wimbledon Championships. The Serbian had sustained the injury in the fourth round of the French Open. Djokovic overran the 27-year-old Czech professional in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

In the second round, the seven-time Wimbledon champion clashed with a home favorite, Jacob Fearnley. The Brit had entered the tournament as a wildcard and was taking on his idol. Novak Djokovic took a two-set lead but the Brit fought back, winning the crowd, to win the third set. He was close to taking the fourth set also, but the 37-year-old 24-time Grand Slam champion was too good to be beaten.

Djokovic faced his toughest opponent in the tournament in the third round. Alexei Popyrin tested the Serbian, taking the first set 6-4. Djokovic began the comeback in the second set, winning the next three sets to defeat the Australian 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6.

It was in the fourth round that Novak Djokovic faced his first-seeded opponent in the tournament. Holger Rune was seeded 15th and was touted as the Serbian’s first real test. However, the Dane underperformed, with Djokovic defeating him 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

This sent Djokovic into his 15th Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance, but an injury made Alex De Minaur, his quarterfinal opponent, withdraw from the tournament. Novak Djokovic then entered the semifinal, his 13th in the competition.
