According to Williams Racing’s head of vehicle performance Dave Robson, the team’s planned changes to the car for 2024 will be critical for 2026. For most of the season, the team based in the Grove has struggles, which are mainly attributed to the car being overweight at the beginning of the competition. This exercise emerged as the team transitioned during the winter to work more on enhancing its structures and systems.
Navigating the Complex Resource Allocation Challenge
Williams intends to bring several upgrades into the car throughout the 2024 season in a bid to make instant enhancements. However, the team has to be very much mindful of its resource usage because of the restrictions that are inherent in Formula 1 such as how aerodynamics are tested. It is made even worse by the looming regulation changes in 2026 for the upcoming cars which could see teams shifting focus to next year’s cars more than the next year’s racing season.
Robson thinks that the major aerodynamic concepts for the 2026 car cannot be developed at the moment yet. Williams is leveraging the situation to start an early analysis of the new regulations. This way the team is prepared mentally for the season 2026 while at the same time, the distribution of resources in the coming years is reasonable, he stated.
But balancing the resource between not just from now, but from several months ago through the next couple of years, is going to be tricky, but obviously it’s the same for everyone and I’m sure most people will be fully focused on 2026 very quickly come the new year, and then it will be interesting then to see what people do next year.
Merging 2024 and 2025 Projects

It was asked from Robson how the time will be shared on the 2024, 2025, and 2026 projects, he prefers that Williams’s approach will be to incorporate developmental work for both the 2024 and 2025 cars. The idea is to make as much developmental progress as possible, while also allowing the team to move forward as much as possible towards the 2026 car at the same time.
Robson also mentioned that the 2024 and 2025 cars are being completed as one project with actual work on the 2025 car to be completed early 2025. This can be viewed as an overlap that enables Williams to bring out huge updates toward the end of ’24, which will act as the basis for the ‘2025 car and in turn save the resources for the ‘2026 car.
Conclusion
Williams Racing is amid an important but rather volatile period where it focuses on pressing functional incremental improvements and equally long-term strategic objectives. In this way, the team is getting optimally ready for both seasons and is preparing the base for the year 2026 car in Formula 1.
Robson again emphasizes that this phase is not friendly to resource management, and the strength of Amalgam in this respect will be crucial in determining the team’s future success. Therefore, many of Williams’s current activities will continue to impact its overall competitiveness in the ensuing years.
