Serena Williams’ Former Coach Identifies Coco Gauff’s US Open Flaw

Coco Gauff

The elimination of Coco Gauff at the US Open has been very disappointing. Following such a stellar win last year, taking home her first Grand Slam, Coco Gauff was disappointing this year. Her early elimination in the round of 16 after being defeated by Emma Navarro sparks some real concerns.

The 2024 US Open was not what Coco Gauff expected it to be. The young 20-year-old American, against Navarro, made 60 unforced errors and struck 19 double faults during the match. This is quite contrary to her brilliant run last year. Also, this number of court mistakes was pretty surprising, including recent successes.

One glaring problem was the second serve from Gauff, which for most of this season has been pretty debilitating. According to Serena Williams’ erstwhile coach, the fault indeed lay in this weakness for her defeat. Stubbs commented that the serve of Gauff was inconsistent and was repeatedly targeted by her opponents, especially Navarro, who found it easier to bring out her vulnerabilities.

 Criticism about Coaching

Another bone of contention for Stubbs was with Coco Gauff’s coach. She felt that the latter made the big mistake of being very vocal about tactics with Gauff during the match. According to her, that might have been an easy way for Navarro’s team to decode their game plan. In big-point games, such strategic aspects make all the difference. However, she took a more critical view of Coco Gauff’s technique, particularly her serve. There are some issues there with the low elbow, and she also has quite an unusual grip, she explained.

Defending Gauff’s Potential

Despite this, hope is not lost for Coco Gauff. She is still very talented and has much promise if she can make adjustments. The things she will need to continue working on for future events are her service and mental toughness. The tennis community will be keeping a close eye on what happens with her. Coco Gauff has put in much work, and her poor performances in matches are not because she has not been trying. Coco Gauff will improve in execution as long as she stays committed to her hard work. She is confident in her abilities and potential.

Coco Gauff’s early ousting from the US Open has revealed some of these rough edges that she needs to polish: her serve and, most of all, her mental toughness. Even as critiques by Serena Williams’ old coach outline the clear holes in Gauff’s game, much promise remains. She will have to put in some real work to fix these specific areas, and in doing so, she’ll be able to rise above these issues and return even more robust in the upcoming tournaments.
