Will Howard had a good, not great, day as the quarterback for Ohio State in their 21-17 victory against Nebraska at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. Howard was 13-of-16 for 202 yards three touchdowns and 1 interception. Howard also quieted some concerns about him throwing the deep ball, with long passes to both Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate, who had his first 100-yard receiving game on Saturday. Nevertheless, the Buckeyes need to play better when they face Penn State in a colossal meeting of top five teams.
Will Howard’s Big Day
Howard’s good play was one of the few bright spots for Ohio State. Not only was he very accurate, at an 81.3% completion percentage, but he also had a 246.7 quarterback rating in the game. He will need to be about that accurate if the Buckeyes are to win at Penn State. He benefits from having great wide receivers who are always open.
Carnell Tate’s Big Day
Carnell Tate had his first 100-yard receiving day for Ohio State. He caught a pass from Will Howard for 47 yards which helped his total yardage. He caught a total of four passes in the game. It would be big for Ohio State, and Quarterback Will Howard, if Tate were added to the ranks of Ohio State wide receivers. They may need him against Penn State.
Problems At Running Back
Quinshon Judkins and Treyvon Henderson rushed for a total of 54 yards. Ohio State was outrushed by Nebraska 121 to 64 yards. Ohio State was hurt by injuries on the offensive line. Starting Left Tackle Josh Simmons is out for the year. The injury to Simmons is particularly devastating.
Quinshon Judkins had only 29 rushing yards yesterday. He did score a touchdown, but it was a receiving touchdown. Treyvon Henderson had only 25 yards in a difficult performance. Between them, they make more than 42.5 million in Name, Image, and Likeness money (NIL). They both are young men but get paid like professionals, and Ohio State needs them to play better.
Game 7 Notes
1. Do-everything Safety Caleb Downs returned punts for the first time this season. He spelled Brandon Inness.
2. Freshman Eddick Houston played at Defensive Tackle. It was the first time in his career he played there.
3. Zen Michalski got his first career start as a Left Tackle for Ohio State. He was replacing the injured Josh Simmons. Zen Michalski also left the game with an injury in the fourth quarter.
4. 104,830 people attended the game including a couple of big recruits for Ohio State.
5. Nebraska out-possessed Ohio State roughly 34-25 minutes.
6. Will Howard’s completion percentage was among the highest in Ohio State history.
7. Jaylen McClain started his first game ever at safety due to the Lathan Ransom injury.
Scoring Summary
Tate opened the scoring for Ohio State as the Buckeyes took a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, Nebraska kicked a field goal and Ohio State answered with a touchdown to Jerimiah Smith. Nebraska kicked another field goal and the score was 14-6 at halftime. The only scoring in the third quarter was a Nebraska field goal. In the fourth quarter, Nebraska got a touchdown from Dante Dowdell to take the lead in Columbus. Then Quinshon Judkins caught a touchdown pass from Will Howard to give Ohio State the win.
Showdown Next Week
Next week at noon Ohio State travels to “Happy Valley” to take on Penn State. It might be a clash of the top five teams. Ohio State will have to play much better against Penn State if they want to win. They will need Will Howard, the running game, and the defense to win that game. Will Howard had a big day as the quarterback for the Buckeyes. That is a good thing, they will need him next week at “State College,” in the titanic clash of top-five teams.
