Martinelli, Arsenal’s Last season’s Highest goalscorer has been experiencing what fans deem as a below-average 2023-2024 football season. Having scored 15 Premier League goals last season, one would expect him to rise above such an already high ceiling, but it sadly hasn’t been so.
Although the cause of his grim season could be attributed to some factors, the leader would be injuries. Having suffered two major hamstrings and a foot injury this season, this has caused him to spend almost a month on the sidelines.
His replacement at the left wing, Leonardo Trossard has been clutch though, salvaging and winning games for Arsenal on many occasions. his contribution has placed Arsenal in another title race for the second consecutive season.
Given this, Arsenal fans are now questioning if it is time for Martinelli to get sold.
Why Arsenal Should Sell Gabriel Martinelli https://gty.im/2150565149
Posts on X, have some Arsenal fans advocate why they want Martinelli gone this season.
“I’d replace Martinelli, his output has been poor this season, if an offer of 60m or so comes, I would take that.”
“Get Martinelli as far away from our lineup and better yet, cash in whilst he could fetch 65 to 75m”
Another one believes that Arsenal needs an upgrade on Martinelli:
“We need an upgrade on Martinelli. he can’t be doing hide and see when we need him the most.”
But beyond this, these fans seem to have forgotten too soon, how immense Martinelli was to Arsenal’s title charge last season. His crucial goals, especially against Aston Villa and Newcastle.
It is also significant that some of these fans haven’t learned from the mistakes of other clubs who couldn’t wait to sell a high-ceiling player just because of an off-season.
A case in point would be Kai Havertz. A player whom Arsenal had not only benefitted from Chelsea’s apparent misjudgement, but the fans have now dedicated a spirited chant to, after he abased his critics, and is now one of the best Arsenal players this season.
Certainly, Chelsea, especially their fans would be very disappointed at how they had treated a 23-year-old Kai Havertz and sold him off, despite his heroic display in their Champions League winning campaign.
Despite being a beneficiary of Kai Havertz witch-hunting, it looks like Arsenals Fans themselves are now mirroring similar behaviour to Chelsea, in criticizing Gabriel Martinelli’s performance this season.
Forgetting that he is still quite young at 22, and has a lot of improvements ahead of him.
What Martinelli Could Do to Unsettle His Critics
A hamstring injury can do a load on football players. Most times, it causes them to perform less optimally than they used to. And Martinelli is no different. Having injured his Hamsring twice this season, with a further foot injury to add to that, it was almost expected that his performance wouldn’t be as it used to be.
But with good rehabilitation, in conjunction with professional medical advice, he is certain to regain his lost strengths.
Additionally, having Mikel Arteta, as a coach, who has been very proactive about the mental health of football players would immensely benefit him as well.
What should Arsenal Expect From Martinelli next season? https://gty.im/2150582470
By next season, hopefully, he will have regained in full his athleticism and confidence in front of goal.
I would expect a very healthy competition between him and Trossad. A probability which would eventually be a win-win situation for Arsenal.
