Early in the year, Xavi Hernández announced that he was leaving Barcelona at the end of the season, 30th June. Xavi is going early even though his contract was to end next summer. He made that decision after the controversial defeat by Villarreal. The Independent reported that Barcelona were eyeing Ruben Amorim as Xavi’s replacement. However, Barcelona is not the only one watching Ruben. Liverpool and Bayern Munich are also eyeing him. He is the second-best coach being hunted by teams after Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen’s coach.
Why Choose Ruben Amorim?
Since Liverpool and Bayern Munich are considering Xabi Alonso, Barcelona could have a shot with Ruben Amorim. Just like Xabi Alonso, Ruben is a former footballer. The team he played for last was Benfica before he retired in 2017. He got his coaching license from UEFA and started his career as a football manager in 2019. He has led two of the teams he has coached to championships.
- In 2019, he led SC Braga to win the Portuguese Cup, even though he was with the club for less than six months.
- In 2020, he became the head coach of Sporting CP and has helped the team win 2 Portuguese cups in three seasons. Furthermore, he led the team to their first league season in 19 years. The 39-year-old coach won the Manager of the Year award in the Primeira Liga.
- Like Xabi Alonso, he is a promising young coach bringing new tactics to the soccer field. He is well known for preferring his team to have a back-three structure where there are always three central defenders. However, he sometimes changes his approach when there is a need.
- He has an eye for potential players and takes the risk to shape them to be the best. So far, he has invested in Nuno Mendes, Tiago Tomás, Gonçalo Inácio, Pedro Porro, Matheus Nunes, Pedro Gonçalves, Eduardo Quaresma, Manuel Ugarte, Youssef Chermiti or Geny Catamo.”
The reasons above and more not mentioned make Ruben Amorim among the most-rated coaches, primarily because of what he has achieved at Sporting CP.
