The Dallas Mavericks can go in a few directions this offseason, but they can lean toward a rebuild which will be their best bet. The Mavericks have 11 games remaining in the regular season and sit with a 34-37 record, which would lead to them missing the Plat-In Tournament. The Phoenix Suns beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 123-112 on Friday. The Suns hold the tiebreaker, despite being tied with the Mavericks as the 10th seed.
What Could’ve Been For the Dallas Mavericks
Some Dallas Mavericks fans called for Mark Cuban to sell the team, and now some Mavericks fans are calling for the Adelson family to sell the team. Some people can never be satisfied. However, Cuban, 66, might’ve prevented the Luka Doncic trade from happening. Well, at least prevent Doncic, now 26, from being traded until after the regular season and potential postseason.
Cuban recently spoke to Kirk Henderson and said of Doncic, “If I had any influence, the trade wouldn’t happen. I was just as dumbfounded as everybody else. After I sold the Mavericks, the new Owner Patrick Dumont decided that ‘Okay, in Nico we trust.’ So, here we are.” He then agreed that Doncic is a generational player in the NBA. He compared the trade to allowing Steve Nash to leave Dallas after the 2003-04 NBA season.
What the Dallas Mavericks Can Do
The Dallas Mavericks have options, but they might want to choose to rebuild this summer. The Mavericks have been dealing with injuries, illnesses, and inconsistencies, even before trading Doncic and Quentin Grimes for Anthony Davis, Caleb Martin, and Max Christie. The Mavericks’ current roster no longer looks championship-caliber.
At the end of the day, Dallas chooses from a pool of options, not the journalists and fans. But, from the outside looking in, it’s hard to believe the question of whether the Mavericks should rebuild is being asked. At the same time, Dallas is out of several draft picks in the future, and Kyrie Irving suffered a season-ending injury this season He will be at least part of next season recovering.
The Mavericks will receive a lottery selection this offseason if their seeding doesn’t change in the final 11 games. The Mavericks’ fate would happen as long as Mavericks GM Nico Harrison doesn’t ditch the pick for Kevin Durant. If they receive a lottery selection, they could jump-start a rebuild if they choose to do so. But it’s important to note that Harrison, 52, reportedly traded Doncic to “win now.”
Dallas Mavericks’ Next Steps
The Dallas Mavericks have been in the news for the right and wrong reasons since the Doncic trade in early February. The Mavericks can’t change the past, but they can choose to rebuild and build a better future. The Mavericks will begin a four-game road trip on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Eastern against the Brooklyn Nets. They’re short-handed, to put it mildly, but can still make the playoffs before beginning the rebuild process.
