Washington Wizards Look To Rebound From a Terrible Month

Washington Wizards

The Washington Wizards just had one of the worst months in the history of the National Basketball Association. Washington went winless(0-14) in November. The team’s 124-114 loss last night to the Milwaukee Bucks was the 13th time the Washington Wizards lost by double figures in November. Unfortunately for the Wizards, a winless month is not unfamiliar territory.

Washington went winless as well in February 2024. The losing streak began in January and extended into March. The losing streak lasted 16 games in all. The Wizards are the 16th team in NBA history to go winless over an entire month. Will the calendar turning over to December bring on-court success for the Washington Wizards?

Washington Wizards Have Been Historically Poor

Washington, unsurprisingly, has the league’s worst record at 2-16. Their .111 winning percentage has them on a 9-73 pace which would tie them for the fewest wins in an 82-game NBA season with the 1972-1973 Philadelphia 76ers. The worst winning percentage in league history was the 2011-2012 Charlotte Bobcats who went 7-59 in a strike-shortened season. With a little over 20% of the NBA regular season in the books, the Washington Wizards are on pace to be one of the worst teams in league history. Fortunately for them, they still have 60+ games to try to avoid going down in infamy.

Wizards Season Summary

The Washington Wizards are 28th in the league in scoring and the bottom 10 in many offensive categories including field goal percentage, three-point percentage, rebounds, and turnovers per game. It is not just Washington’s offense that has been terrible in 2024, as their defense has been putrid as well. They are 29th in opponent points per game and are one of the NBA’s worst teams in both opposing field goal percentage, and opposing three-point percentage. Washington was just as bad on the defensive end of the floor last season.

Washington’s offense is led by Shooting Guard Jordan Poole. He is leading the team in both points per game(21.0) and assists per game(4.9). As was the case when Poole was with the Golden State Warriors, watching him is an experience. He is near the bottom of the league shooting 44.8% from the field, but is in the top 40 in shooting from three-point range. He is also fourth in the league in steals per game at 1.9.

Final Thoughts

The Washington Wizards look to get December off to a winning start when they visit the high-flying Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday. Their schedule does not get any easier from there as the Wizards have a four-game homestand that includes matchups with the Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets, and Memphis Grizzlies. Washington must put a miserable November in the rearview mirror as they look toward success in December. There is still ample time to ensure the Wizards do not go down as one of the worst basketball teams in history.
