After the 2023 season, the Washington Huskies coaches are leaving the program. Coming off a 14-1 season and a trip to the CFP National Championship Game. The Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer took the job as head coach of Alabama since Nick Saban retired after a loss in the Rose Bowl. Now, the Patriots have to fill another position as Steve Belichick has left the professional ranks to become the new Washington defensive coordinator.
Patriots OLB coach Steve Belichick has now accepted the position to become the University of Washington’s defensive coordinator.
After 12 seasons coaching in the NFL with the Patriots, he heads to the college ranks in a coordinator capacity.
Belichick called defensive plays…

Washington Hires Steve Belichick As New Defensive Coordinator
Steve Belichick spent the last five seasons under his father, Bill Belichick, as their defensive coordinator. Before calling the plays on defense, he was coaching the outside linebackers. Steve is joining a familiar foe in Jedd Fisch, who will be the new Washington head coach starting this season in 2024. They were together in New England dating back to 2020.
It often makes things easier when coaches have chemistry from being united in other places or on teams together. Both Fisch and Steve Belichick have experience in that. This is not the only connection with a close relationship between father and son.
Washington Coaching Staff
As previously stated, this is not the first time seeing coaches work together. Not only has the former Patriots coach’s son done this before, but Pete Carroll’s son has as well. Brennan Carroll was on Jedd Fisch’s staff at Arizona. He will be tagging along at Washington as the offensive coordinator.
With Kalen DeBoer off to the Alabama Crimson Tide, Washington is finding their new staff to get things rolling for 2024. Many young coaches are starting to go to the college ranks. In recent times, they have been very successful under great leadership from the coaches who have been there for years. Washington will be starting fresh, but they will have experience on the sidelines to help the student-athletes develop.
Washington Huskies 2023 Season
The Washington Huskies 2023 season was just short of a magical one. Close to staying undefeated despite the loss to Michigan in the CFP National Championship Game. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr was in the Heisman conversation. Penix finished the season with 36 touchdowns, 4,903 passing yards, and 11 interceptions.
A great run for Washington since Penix suffered season-ending injuries throughout his college career. Their offense was the highlight of the season in the Pac-12 conference. Now, with a new guy as the headman, things will look a bit different as they enter the Big Ten in 2024. Coaching spots are being taken and getting filled as September approaches seven more months!
