Washington Freedom crush MI New York

SRH

The Washington Freedom are on a roll, registering their fourth win of the season, making it four wins out of five and the only team yet to be beaten in the tournament. It was shaping up to be a good game when MI captain Kieron Pollard won the toss and put the opposition in. But things didn’t go exactly according to plan, as star opener Travis Head scored a solid 54 with support lower down the order from Andries Gous, who made 59, taking the score to 182 for 5.

The MI New York’s replay was, well, it wasn’t one. A team that is not lacking in talent and experience, but on the day, the Washington Freedom bowlers were just too good for the opposition. Jasdeep Singh and Marco Jansen are leading the way with top figures. This defeat, their third so far, means that New York is on a spot above the rock-bottom Seattle Orcas.

MI New York: Fold without a fight

It was one of those games where the outcome was decided in the first four overs of the second inning. Getting off to a torrid start where the top six batsmen don’t get past five runs and being reduced to 25 for 6, the game was as good as over. The three main quickies for Washington tore through the New York batting lineup, and no batter, apart from Romario Shepherd and Trent Boult, was able to reach double figures.

The game was pretty much over by the seventh over, and barring some miracle lower-order display, the Washington Freedom cruised home. At this point, the disparity in the strength of both sides is apparent. Washington Freedom seems to have one of the stronger sides all around. And now, as the table toppers, it is up to them to defend their position.

Takeaway from the rest of tournament

As noted, Washington Freedom appears to have a very solid side. With good players in the bowling and batting departments. Having yet to lose a game, their confidence will be high, but they must guard against complacency. The washed-out game against the Texas Super Kings is the one side they have yet to beat, so the team needs to remain razor-focused for the rest of the season if they are to triumph in the end.
