Washington Commanders: Jayden Daniels Still a No-Go for Week 8

The Washington Commanders have key injuries heading into Sunday's game.

Is Washington Commanders Quarterback Jayden Daniels going to play on Sunday? Buckle up, this is going to be an emotional rollercoaster. The Commanders, coming off a dominating 40-7 win against the Carolina Panthers Sunday, are hoping to have their history-making rookie quarterback under center for Week 8. The problem is a rib injury he suffered in Sunday’s game that has cast doubt on whether or not fans will see him face off against Bears Quarterback Caleb Williams.

A 2024 first-round pick out of USC, Williams has thrown for more than 1,000 yards this season and has 169 yards rushing. When it comes to Daniels’ status, it’s a waiting game that makes fans remember the RG3 era. However, much has changed since then, and for the better. The new Washington Commanders’ process goes two ways: Either he’s 100 percent ready or not.

Quinn: Update On Daniels Friday

On Wednesday, Washington Commanders Head Coach Dan Quinn announced Daniels did not practice but will continue to attend team meetings and other team functions. He also said there will be an update on Daniels’ status after Friday’s practice. Quinn’s concern is that Daniels can play his game without adjustments. It’s for him to “be him, full turn up,” Quinn said.

Quinn also said playing against Williams on Sunday is not a motivating factor for Daniels. It’s “anybody, anywhere, anytime,” he said. “That’s one of the things I really admire about him. His readiness, his wanting to go prove it…It’s about him and the readiness to get ready and help our team. Ultimately that’s why so many of his teammates readily gravitate towards him…”

Kingsbury: There Is A Plan

Washington Commanders Offensive Coordinator Kliff Kingsbury told media on Thursday there is a plan in place that works with both players. “DQ [Dan Quinn] set up a great plan. I won’t get into the details of it…just to make sure both guys are getting enough reps and are getting a comfort level with the plays…,” he said.

Up to Week 7, Marcus Mariota wasn’t a topic of conversation, but changed that on Sunday. He completed 18-of-23 for 205 yards with two touchdowns. He showed that even though he’s been in the league since 2015, he still has much to provide for a franchise. As a reminder: Mariota has thrown for 16,023 yards and has 95 touchdowns in his long career.

Mariota, Kingsbury explained, hasn’t had a lot of snaps with the Washington Commanders but has been a pleasant surprise. “Marcus hadn’t taken a snap with our offense in 68 days prior to the game,” he said. “[He] came in and performed at a really high level and made bunch of plays. It was good to see, and it takes a unique person/player to do that. We feel really good about trying to get him some reps this week. We’ll take it from there.”

Daniels: One Of Many Team Injuries For Washington Commanders

Quinn and the Washington Commanders coaching staff were careful not to give any hints other than to say it’s day-to-day. This was also done in the case of Running Back Brian Robison Jr. His status wasn’t known until late Saturday before Sunday’s win. That will probably be the same for many players on the Washington Commanders Depth Chart dealing with injury.

Out of the 11 players listed as injured, but are in limited practice this week, only three are labeled as not practicing. Those three are Daniels (rib), Tackle Brandon Coleman who is out with a concussion, and Defensive End Clelin Ferrell (knee).  Coleman and Daniels are the only two who have not practiced so far this week.
