Washington Commanders Shine Bright in 20-10 Win Against New England

Washington Commanders jerseys have been released.

The Washington Commanders concluded the 2024 NFL Preseason with a 20-10 victory over the New England Patriots Sunday night.

The Washington Commanders won only four games during the 2023 NFL Season. Of those four they won only won one home game. Sunday night’s win is a step in the right direction going into Week 1.

Most of the time, the preseason’s final game is called the ‘dress rehearsal’, where First stringers are played more to get into a rhythm for Week 1. Sunday night was the latter, as Second and Third string players were getting last-minute looks from staff before this week’s roster cuts. While that is the case, head coach Dan Quinn wanted the players to enjoy the moment.  It may not have looked the way in the First half, but the Second Half was a different story.

With Commanders starter Jayden Daniels benched in preps for Week 1, Jeff Driskel took the helm in the First Half, completing 12 out of 18 throws for 73 yards and one interception. The Second Half was the Trace McSorely show, who came out at the beginning of the Half going 14 plays for 54 yards, putting the Commanders in position for a 34-yard field goal by new Kicker Cade York.

York signed with the  Commanders as part of a draft t pick deal with the Cleveland Browns. The Browns agreed to trade York to the Washington Commanders for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2025. York replaced former kicker Riley Patterson who was released by the Commanders shortly after the 13-6 loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 2 of the preseason. Patterson landed only two of his four field goals that night.

With 9:59 left in the Fourth Quarter McSorely would lead the team down the field again, this time putting running back Michael Wiley in position for a nine-yard touchdown. In the last three minutes of the game, he led the team to another Washington Commanders touchdown with a short four-yard pass to wide receiver Martavis Bryant.  McSorely finished his night by completing 12 out of 21 for 125 yards.

McSorely deserves QB3 Spot

The one difference between McSorely and Driskol that cannot go unnoticed is McSorely’s ability to get the ball downfield for points. He’s aggressive but strategic, only running when he needs to and making sure the lane he’s running is as safe as possible. Driskol is aggressive, but the ball doesn’t move as fast as it does with McSorely. If there was a choice to make on the QB2 or QB3 spot, McSorely is the recommended choice. Points didn’t get on the board until the Second Half, and that cannot be ignored.

The Commanders, with McSorley under center, scored 17 unanswered points in the Fourth Quarter. This isn’t about ball control, as both teams were only a few minutes off from being equal in time of possession. He just gets it and needs to be the QB3. The Washington Commanders will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1 at Tampa Bay.
