Washington Capitals Alex Ovechkin joined Elite 700-700 Club Last Week

Washington Capitals

Last week in the Washington Capitals’ 3-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights in Washington, D.C., superstar Alexander Ovechkin recorded a pair of assists. After a 20-year NHL career, everything the 39-year-old forward does is notable in some way.  However, last Tuesday’s milestone was a bit more special for “The Great 8” as he joined an elite list of names that includes some of the greatest nameplates to lace up a pair of hockey skates in the National Hockey League. With his second assist in the victory on 10/15/2024, Ovechkin joined only five other NHL skaters to post those numbers in the NHL.

Washington Capitals Captain has wild career numbers

An elite goal-scoring threat since he arrived at the Washington Capitals in North America in 2005, Russian winger Alexander Ovechkin is nothing short of a generational talent. Ovechkin has scored 854 goals in the NHL leaving him only 41 goals off the pace of eclipsing Wayne Gretzky’s NHL regular season-record of 894 career goals. Over the last three seasons, Ovechkin has averaged 41 goals per season which should put him near the record in the 2025-26 NHL season, unless the Washington Capitals goes “Super Sayian” this season with a goal-scoring outburst to surge those numbers closer to the all-time mark of “The Great One”.

On Tuesday, it was Ovechkin’s assists numbers bringing him the NHL milestone.  On Aliaksei Protas’ second-period goal last week, Ovechkin recorded his second assist of the contest bringing his NHL regular-season career total to the 700 mark. With 850 NHL goals under his belt, the assist placed Ovechkin into another elite category of NHL history as one of only six men to ever record 700 goals and 700 assists in the National Hockey League.

The 700 goals -700 assists VIP Club

Washington Capitals Captain Alex Ovechkin joins Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Jaromir Jagr, Marcel Dionne, and Phil Esposito as the only players in NHL history to record 700 goals and 700 assists throughout a career in the best hockey league in the world.  As a rookie and sophomore NHL skater, Ovechkin played with Jagr as a member of the Washington Capitals in 2001 and 2002. Jagr was traded by the Washington Capitals to the New York Rangers in 2004.

Despite the accomplishment, Ovechkin is more focused on the Washington Capitals season at hand. “When you play 20 years in hockey, I’m pretty sure you’ll get the same number,” Ovechkin said. “Yeah, it’s a pretty big number. Nice to be in that company. So, yeah, move forward.”

While Alexander Ovechkin has Wayne Gretzky’s regular season-goal-scoring record in his crosshairs, “The Great 8” would need some divine intervention to reach “The Great Ones” all-time assist record of 1,963. Ovechkin would only need 1, 263 more helpers in his career! The final point totals for these NHL icons are as follows.  Wayne Gretzky finished with 894 goals and 1,963 sitting first all-time with a mind-numbing 2,857. If you took away every single one of  Gretzky’s 894 career goals, Wayne would STILL be the all-time NHL points leader with an adjusted 1,963-point total.  Insanity!

Former Washington Capital forward, Jaromir Jagr, sits in second place in the record books with 766 goals and 1,155 helpers for 1,921 points.  Gordie Howe’s marquee career saw him record 801 goals and 1,049 assists for 1,850 total NHL points. Marcel Dionne recorded 731 goals and 1,040 helpers for 1,771 points across three NHL franchises. Finally, Phil Esposito scored 717 and 873 to finish his career with 1, 590 points.

Mark Messier is 3rd all-time in points but just missed out on the 700-700 club with 694 regular season tallies. Same for Steven Yzerman, 7th all-time in points, but scored 692 goals in the regular season. Both of those man tallied over 1,000 assists during their NHL careers.
