Two goals from the penalty kill unit for the Washington Capitals contributed significantly to the 4-1 road win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night. Once they had the lead, the Capitals’ defense unit put the clamps on Philadelphia who entered the game already struggling to score goals this year
With the win, the Washington Capitals improve to 4-1-0 on the season and Philadelphia falls to 1-4-1. The teams will return to the ice again tonight for the second game of a back-to-back, home-and-home series. While last night’s game featured an early starting time, tonight’s contest will be the more typical 7:30 PM weekday evening start at Capital One Arena.

The Washington Capitals scored two short-handed goals against a flailing Philly powerplay in the first period to establish a 2-0 lead. Nic Dowd scored his first of the season just under four minutes into the game. Offseason addition Andrew Mangiapane doubled Washington’s lead with five minutes remaining to play in the first period.
With no second-period scoring, fans in South Philadelphia strapped in for a third-period fight against the surging Capitals team. Flyers’ defenseman Travis Sanheim scored 34 seconds into the final regulation period but the joy was short-lived on South Broad. John Carlson scored just 1:04 after the Flyers’ goal to seize the game’s momentum right back in Washington’s favor. Jakob Chychrun added an insurance goal with six minutes remaining in the game to end the scoring at 4-1.
Charlie Lindgren was excellent in stopping 17-of-18 shots for the Washington Capitals against the Philadelphia Flyers. His best save of the night was an incredible glove save on Bobby Brink that would’ve tied the game for Philadelphia in the first period. Mangianpane would score his second short-handed goal 1:53 after the big stop from his goalie.
Washington & Philly battle again tonight
Both teams are required to make the 132-mile journey from Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA to Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. for tonight’s rematch.
The Washington Capitals will be looking for much of the same as last night with a solid defensive effort and opportune goal-scoring. Philadelphia will look to flip the downward momentum of a five-game early-season losing streak with a tough task on the road against the Capitals and Alex Ovechkin.
Washington is 2-1-0 at Capital One Arena this season with consecutive road wins over then-undefeated teams from Vegas and Dallas. The Flyers have played a handful of road contests already this season as the team started on the West Coast with a four-game road trip against the NHL’s Pacific division. The Flyers are 1-2-1 away from Philly this season.

Given the nature of a second competitive hockey game in 24 hours, it is reasonable to expect a backup goalie for tonight’s game for the Washington Capitals. The Caps features Logan Thompson behind Charlie Lindgren while Philadelphia tasks Ivan Fedotov with backup duties behind Sam Ersson.
Based on the stats, Washington could find offensive success tonight at home by directing shots to the net. The Capitals averaging 4 goals per game, while the Flyers backup has struggled in both starts this season. Fedotov is 0-2 with a 6.09 goals-against-average and 81% save percentage over five periods in 2024.
Logan Thompson has provided solid relief with a 2-0 record. Thompson brings a 3.41 GAA and 88% puck save rate over his two games in 2024.
