Virat Kohli’s poor run in the T20 World Cup 2024 continued as he became the first player, and second overall, to bag a golden duck in T20 World Cup play.
Fast left-armer Saurabh Netravalkar bowled Kohli with his first delivery of the match—an away delivery that Kohli just could not resist and a straight drive off Gous’s thumb. This added to his disappointing run of scores. He has 1, 4, and 0 in his first three games in the tournament.
Meanwhile, after earning seven wickets against the USA, India reached the Super Eight stage of the WC 2016. Though Kohli failed to perform well in the match, Suryakumar Yadav achieved fifty powerfully, and Arshdeep Singh bowled four USA players.

When India played against the USA at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, there was hardly any competition, but the match turned out to be close. Out of form, the USA was successful in trapping both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in front of the wickets off successive deliveries. USA’s Netravalkar, and India were at a precarious 15 for 2 while chasing a meager target of 111.

With India in a spot of bother, Suryakumar Yadav was the man of the hour to come out and take charge. Joining hands with Shivam Dube, Suryakumar Yadav then stabilized the ship, counting on the situation that the team needed, and forged a match-winning partnership.
However, thanks to Yadav’s nervous and efficient performance, the USA was stopped from inflicting more damage, and India made it to the Super Eight stage of the tournament.
Coming into his first match for India, Saurabh Netravalkar enjoyed an ideal beginning by getting rid of two Indian superstars. To Kohli, getting a delivery slightly wrong was almost perfect, as the batter fended and edged the ball to the keeper.
Similarly, Rohit Sharma got out to one that was pitched slightly more towards the line of the stumps and got a leading edge that was caught at mid-off. These early successes had India on the back foot, but it wasn’t until Netravalkar threatened India that India staged their fight back.
India’s Middle-Order Response
Despite the early setbacks, India’s middle order showed resilience. Suryakumar Yadav, despite struggling initially against USA’s cutters, found his rhythm and played crucial shots. Shivam Dube, who initially struggled, stayed unbeaten with a vital 31, ensuring India crossed the finish line.
A turning point in the match came when the USA was penalized for slow over rates, awarding India five extra runs. This shifted the momentum further in India’s favor, easing the pressure and helping them to a more manageable run chase.
Arshdeep Singh’s career-best figures of 4/9 set the tone for India. His early strikes, including a two-wicket opening over, left the USA struggling. Contributions from Hardik Pandya, who bowled a wicket-maiden, and Axar Patel, who took a crucial wicket, further restricted the USA to a below-par total of 110.
