The struggles of Virat Kohli in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup got worse, especially after getting out on a duck for the second time in T20 internationals in India’s recent group-stage match against the United States of America at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium.
This dismissal proved to be a rather embarrassing one, as this was the sixth time that Kohli has been dismissed on a duck in T20Is and was a reflection of his poor form elsewhere in the tournament.
A Shocking Dismissal Of Kohli

Looking at his recent performance, Kohli had managed only 1 and 4 in his earlier encounters against Ireland and Pakistan, respectively, and had been dismissed on the first ball that he faced against the USA. Bowler Saurabh Netravalkar used the extra length as a left-arm pacer to edge this delivery outside Kohli’s reach and target him.
Kohli barely got a tickle on it and was caught by the keeper without troubling the scoring board, thus the golden duck. This became a big moment in the match because Kohli only got out on the first ball of the T20I twice in his entire career up to that point.
Historical Context

This was Kohli’s sixth T20I duck, which makes him the second Indian to do so most in this format, only behind T20I captain Rohit Sharma, who has scored 12 ducks. Earlier, Kohli was equal fifth with KL Rahul without a duck in 2019.
Moreover, Kohli entered the list of the eight Indians who were dismissed for a duck at least once in a T20 World Cup before the current tournament. Alongside Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Dinesh Karthik, and many others.
After Kohli got out, there was an improved display of bowling by Netravalkar, who was instrumental in dismissing Indian captain Rohit Sharma. This left India in disbelief, with both their two-star players back in the pavilion in the early part of the innings. Rishabh Pant tried to apply some temperament and take a few risks to steady the innings but was out on a score of 18.
India’s Recovery and Victory
However, thanks to Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube, they scored a good partnership to take the Indian team out of their initial rough patch. Both of these players slowly and steadily made sure India crossed the line to win quite comfortably and register a place in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024.
India’s capacity to return from early losses and advance in the opposition was generally subject to its capacity to stay strong under coercion. With his brilliant duck against the USA, Kohli exhibited the flightiness of cricket and the difficulties that even tip-top players should fight with.
Enthusiasts of India will be confident that Virat, whose expertise and experience are crucial for the group’s prosperity, can return to his past level as the team progresses in the T20 World Cup.
