Virat Kohli’s Epic Knock Against Pakistan in T20 World Cup 2022

Virat Kohli, in the last time that India played against its arch-rival Pakistan, performed at his best in the T20 World Cup. Like a true captain of the Indian cricket team, Kohli’s brilliant innings yet again sealed a thrilling win for Rohit Sharma and his team in the MCG packed to capacity in the year 2022.

It only got more interesting as both teams went to the final-over cricket battle, where India’s talented team defeated Pakistan. However, Virat Kohli led India to victory, while Babar Azam’s Pakistan also had a very good show, and they qualified to the final of the ICC event, where they lost to England.

In this short paper, the focus will be primarily on the role of form and leadership as instrumental in transforming the prospects of the Pakistan cricket team. Consequently, there is a prevalence of distrust and stereotyping of Pakistani cricketers as cheaters.

To the 2024 World Cup, Pakistan, having been badly hit in the last World Cup campaign under skipper Babar Azam, is all set to make a comeback. Last year, Pakistan could not qualify for the next round of the World Cup, which put them in a bad spot to start as they are now, causing Babar to resign from the captaincy.

Nevertheless, he was termed captain of the white ball many months before the 2024 tournament, with the aim of leading the team to victory.

Before the start of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) show during the World Cup match opener, Babar Azam recalled the semi-final match against Australia. He noted, however, that the loss should not be attributed to a number of errors from a particular player because it was a collective effort.

”I do believe that in the semi-final against Australia, we could have stood up and won that game. But in that match, it was fielding, which made a different impact. Normally,  I do my level best to avoid getting into the situation of bowling tight ones, but in the last over, if two or three dot balls could have been gotten, then pressure would have affected them. But no, we lost as a team and not as individuals.”

The 2022 clash with India

In an interaction, Babar also shared views on the upcoming decisive match against India in the 2022 T20 World Cup. “Well, look, for me, in the 2022 World Cup, we could and should have won the India game, but they pinched it,” Babar added. Therefore, in that match, Kohli and his powerful bat demonstrated great form when he played a famous six on Haris Rauf.

Commentator Gerard Whateley famously termed the ‘shot of an emperor’. Kohli’s unbeaten 82 off 53 balls led India to a thrilling four-wicket victory over Pakistan, with captain Rohit Sharma lifting Kohli in celebration after the successful 160-run chase.
