On Saturday, the distinguished cricket career of veteran Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan came to an official close. He capped an era that started with his 2010 debut on the international scene. About two years after his final appearance in national colors, Dhawan declared his retirement from international competition. Since then, many cricket players, both past and present, have expressed their gratitude to Dhawan for his services to Indian cricket.
Virat Kohli, the opener’s longtime teammate, has also wished Dhawan on his official X profile. Both the Indian team Shikhar Dhawan and Delhi, their state team, used the same changing room as Kohli. In white-ball formats, Dhawan, Kohli, and Rohit Sharma constituted a powerful batting three that ruled for a significant portion of the 2010s.
Kohli’s Farewell to Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan gave one of the “most dependable openers” descriptions, and Kohli congratulated him for his outstanding performance. “Shikhar, you’ve given us so many treasured memories—from your daring debut to emerging as one of India’s most reliable openers. Although we shall miss your distinctive smile, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm for the game, your legacy endures.
“I am grateful for the experiences, remarkable shows, and your unwavering commitment to leading from the heart. Gabbar, I wish you well in your upcoming innings off the field! ” Kohli stated. After the T20 World Cup victory in June of this year, Kohli had previously announced the end of his T20I career. But he is still a vital member of the team in both ODIs and Tests.
Dhawan and Kohli were both instrumental in India’s 2013 Champions Trophy triumph. Shikhar Dhawan had written an emotional note on ‘X’, reflecting on his experience and expressing his appreciation: “As I close this chapter of my cricketing journey, I carry with me countless memories and gratitude. I appreciate all of your kindness and help. Jai Hind!”
Dhawan, an important player for the team in the 50-over format, scored 6,793 runs at a remarkable average of 44.11, with 17 hundred and 39 fifties. Despite having a brief Test career, he is most known for his outstanding 185 against Australia on his debut. In the format, he amassed 2,315 runs at an average of 40.61, including seven centuries.

On and off the field, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli had a close relationship. The two hitters are from West Delhi and entered the system nearly simultaneously as young players. On March 16, 2013, Dhawan made his Test debut and broke records by becoming the fastest player to reach a century off of just 85 balls. In 2013 and 2017, he went on to win the Champions Trophy twice in a row as the highest run scorer, earning the coveted “golden bat.”
The southpaw’s outstanding results in ICC ODI competitions for India earned him the moniker “Mr. ICC.” During the 2015 ODI World Cup, Shikhar Dhawan also scored the most runs for India. He represented India in 167 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and scored 755 runs at an average of 44.11 and a strike rate of 91.35, totaling 6793 runs.
In 68 Twenty20 Internationals, he participated and amassed 1759 runs with a strike average of 126.36 and an average of 27.92, recording 11 fifties. Shikhar Dhawan scored 2315 runs at an average of 40.61 in 34 Test matches, including seven hundred and five fifties. He will carry on practicing in the Indian Premier League following his retirement from both domestic and international competitions.
