Virat Kohli Clarifies Dispute With Gambhir Ahead of Sri Lanka Series

Virat Kohli
Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli are expected to team up again for the India vs Sri Lanka ODI series in Colombo next month. Their past conflicts did raise eyebrows when Gambhir was appointed as the new head coach of the Indian men’s team earlier this month. However, Kohli convinced the BCCI that he could bury the old battles for a healthy working relationship with Gambhir.

Virat Kohli’s Relationship With Gambhir

In an interview, Gambhir spoke about their relationship. He explained that both share a common goal of working hard for the Indian team and winning trophies for them. Virat Kohli responded positively by making himself available for the ODI series against Sri Lanka from August 3 to 7 in Colombo.
Apart from Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, Kohli had initially requested a longer break following their triumph in the T20 World Cup; however, at Gambhir’s request, he and Sharma made themselves available. The latter, Bumrah, has, though, remained unavailable due to workload management. Reports emerged that Kohli had told the BCCI that he was ready to bury past conflicts and look towards bigger things for Indian cricket.
On the eve of the Indian team’s departure for Pallekele for a three-match T20I series, starting July 27, Gambhir was asked about his equation with Kohli. He explained that it was his personal affair. He asserts that while on the field, everybody fights for the team, but they are all united to make India proud.
The last Kohli-Gambhir clash took place at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow during the IPL match. A year after the incident, both got patched up, and Gambhir was seen hugging Kohli in an IPL match. Kohli later spoke about the incident at a PUMA event. While speaking about trolls, he mentioned how their patch-up disappointed them desperately, eyeing drama. Also, they are not children anymore and those things have been left behind.

Virat Kohli’s Commitment to Indian Cricket

Virat Kohli has made himself available for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka as a mark of his commitment to Indian cricket. Kohli, like a few other seniors, including Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, had asked for an extended break after the T20 World Cup campaign. However, having known the importance of the series and upon the request of the new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, Kohli and Sharma cut their rest short. This proved Kohli’s commitment to the team and how he could put his interest aside for the good cause of Indian cricket.
According to Cricbuzz, Kohli conveyed the message clearly to the BCCI. He told them that he was ready to put all the past differences with Gambhir aside and only think about the success of the team in times to come. The meeting had happened in Barbados right after the win in the T20 World Cup against South Africa, proof of Virat Kohli’s forward-thinking mentality and a desire for a healthy team environment.
Gambhir made it clear that his relationship with Virat Kohli was professional and revolved around winning trophies for India. He said that both are mature people who can work together. His focus has always been on the success of the team and what hard work can bring in terms of attaining objectives, rather than dwelling on past disputes.
The upcoming series against Sri Lanka will prove to be an opportunity where both are going to test their commitment to Indian cricket and will prove their teamwork in the pursuit of common goals. The Indian team leaves for Pallekele to take on the hosts for a three-match T20I series from July 27, marking this new beginning. So all eyes of fans and cricket lovers will be toward this rejuvenated Kohli-Gambhir partnership and how it pans out in on-field performance. The unity and common vision for success will matter for greater heights in international cricket.
