Two stalwarts of Indian cricket have called it quits as far as the shortest format of the game. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are not only legends of Indian cricket, but they are two of the best batsmen in the world, and in the case of Kohli arguably more so than Sharma, as the best batsman of this generation. Rohit Sharma is not far behind as one of the best batsmen in the T20 format.
Before we get into the records, a quick moment for both greats of the game who have said farewell to the format. Whilst it is not the end of the cricketing career for Kohli and Sharma it marks the end of an era for India and indeed for world cricket. So the question is what now? What lies in store for the two greats of the cricketing world? Let’s have a look.
Virat Kohli – Irreplaceable but the Journey Continues
https://gty.im/2159877720
Let’s get a couple of things out of the way first. Virat Kohli is one of a kind. And it is not without reason that he is often called the best batsman of his generation. His contributions to T20 and cricket in general are unsurpassed today. As the man of the match of the World T20 2024 final the trophy cabinet of Indian batter is almost complete. Almost.
Virat Kohli has won virtually everything there is to international cricket. Whilst his career in the Indian Premier League will continue on the world stage there are still a few boxes to tick. The most notable of course is the ICC World Test Championship. The one trophy that is missing in Kohli’s and India’s now growing trophy cabinet. One record that Kohli would be eyeing is Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most runs in ODI cricket where Kohli is around 4500 runs behind. Can the cricketer from Dehli surpass the ‘god of cricket’? Time will tell.
Rohit Sharma – Redemption Almost Complete
For more reasons than one this was Rohit Sharma’s redemption story following the terrible disappointment of the ODI World Cup 2023. India was certainly hurting following that game, and none more so than Rohit Sharma, who had a wound to heal and national glory to restore. Whilst there was some uncertainty involving his selection as player and captain, Rohit repaved the faith and then some by bringing the trophy back to India.
On the personal front, few players can be considered better than Rohit in the shortest format of the game. As the leading scorer in the T20 format at the time of writing Rohit has done what was expected of him. He is a great player that has elevated India to its rightful position at the top of T20 cricket. But what lies beyond?
Rohit – Kohli ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and Beyond
First things first. Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have earned a well-earned rest. Once that is done, the question is what comes next for the two Indian greats? In terms of a long-term goal, the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan will be the main objective. There is a good chance both players will be cut. However, what lies beyond that is a difficult question to answer, especially for Rohit, who has not won an ODI World Cup. But the two men have given Indian cricket and world cricket so much as greats of the game, their legacy alone will live on no matter what happens in the next few years.
