Utah State Jerry Bovee Struggle Fights Firing with Fire

For the Utah State Football program this season, change is coming before they start. Just a few days ago, USU informed their head coach, Blake Anderson, Football Director of Player Development and Community Engagement, Austin Albrecht, and Associate Vice President Deputy Athletics Director for External Affairs, Jerry Bovee, that they were going to be dismissed from employment. Just yesterday, Jerry filed a grievance pursuant to USU policy, meaning he is fighting back.

They were informed by Utah State University of their termination last Thursday after an extensive review of the University’s policies in Title IX laws.

USU has filed charges that these parties have violated the university policies “related to the reporting of sexual and domestic violence and failures of professional responsibilities and violated both his employment agreement and university policy.”

The incident they are being accused of involved a Utah State player last spring. When learning of USU’s intention, Bovee said he was “blindsight based on an inconclusive and untimely review of an incident that took place more than a year ago in April of 2023.”

He went on to say that he “and two other Utah State employees did, in fact, report the incident to the USU Office of Equity.”

He goes on to state that Utah State took eight months to review the situation, which didn’t begin until the fall of last year; they also took eight months to make this decision, and they never gave him a warning or a chance to defend or respond.

Jerry Bovee “is vigorously defending his reputation as an Aggies alum and stellar associate vice president and deputy athletics director.”

This difficult situation of termination and disease could have led to a more aggressive response from Bovee, but he states, “He has no ill will against USU, an institution he loves.”

The charges filed against these football staff members came from USU president Elizabeth Cantwell and athletic director Diana Sabau.

On behalf of the University, they said, “As leaders, we are responsible for ensuring allegations of USU policy violations are investigated. Today’s actions are the result of a thorough external investigation, and we believe the evidence demands immediate action.”

“Our job is to fearlessly hold ourselves and others accountable for their conduct and to make sure that, for the sake of our students and our community, we are living the values of our university. While recognizing the impact of these decisions on our student-athletes and football program, we will continue to take the steps necessary to deliver a respectful, transparent, and winning culture at Utah State University.”

The university hasn’t given any more as there is a 14-day which is in accordance with Utah’s public record laws. Until that time, it appears that Anderson and Bovee are working hard to restore their reputations.

Bovee graduated from USU in 1992 and did some work for Weber State before coming home to the Aggies. The outcome of this challenge will affect all those involved.

With the football season just around the corner and the coaching staff being shaken up, the question is how this will affect the college football team. Can they repair the team’s leaders and put points on the scoreboard when needed? With the clock ticking and fans are watching to see who will be first in and last out.
