Over the last week, the Utah Jazz roster has been taking shape. With the new season and the first game approaching, the Jazz are about to pull the trigger on who will be playing. The NBA season is set to start on October 22, and after the Jazz sign Patty Mills, they have their 16th player. They can only have 15 players, so Babacar Sane is probably only signed on for the training camp and will not play in the season. This means between now and the end of October, the Utah Jazz have a lot of work to do, and each has to figure out how to be a team quickly.
Who Will Get The Most Minutes For The Utah Jazz?
There will be something different this season in the NBA for teams building and wishing for a chance to do better in the playoffs. It seems the one that plays their cards right will win Cooper Flagg, one of the most intriguing upcoming NBA prospects. The Utah Jazz have been endeavoring to build themselves up to one of the NBA greats for years, and getting him wouldn’t hurt. However, many teams are doing all they can to secure a top-five draft pick for next year.
Needing A Change
So far, all team sign-ons and big trades have had to do much with what is to come. With that in mind, the Utah Jazz got Markkanen, Jordan Clarkson, Collin Sexton, John Collins, and Walker Kessler last season. There is room for improvement, with a record of 31 wins and 51 losses. In the backcourt, the Utah Jazz have a great lineup of talent with Collin Sexton, Jordan Clarkson, and Keyonte George. All three may see much playing time together or in any combination. Between the three, they may start in the first game and serve as the backbone of the new Jazz.
The next two could be an interesting mix on the court. Recently signed Svi Mykhailuk is a shooting guard who can put up some big numbers. However, co-team member Brice Sensabaugh may do the same or be used for his size further to the side of the court. Then there is Isaiah Collier, who will probably enjoy his time between the Utah Jazz and the G League and serve as a spot filler, depending on how the team shapes up. Mills may also be a useful backup.
Who Will Score And Be The Heart?
This also has much to do with where Lauri Markkanen will fit in with the team. If they place him up top, they could be weak on the wing side and perimeter, or they could also be expecting to use him for points, wanting Taylor Hendricks and Cody Williams to step it up. With the help of Johnny Juzang, Sensabaugh, and Mykhailiuk, going up against some of the best in the NBA is a lot to ask. Hendricks showed he could be up for the task and the best choice, but the Jazz may be planning to use him as a backup for Markkanen, which means fewer minutes for him and an even more important roll overtime.
As to the center of the Jazz, they have a John Collins, who cut his teeth with them last year. They do have options if they go with Walker Kessler, who could be working hard to change things up for himself after a hard sophomore season. Filiposwki has an unbelievable vision of the court, and Collins and Drew Eubanks aren’t too bad, either.
Will Hardy Patterns
Who plays and how long will never change as Will Hardy decides it all for the third time with the Utah Jazz. He hasn’t started a rookie before and has a pattern of making players work hard to earn every minute of playtime. This doesn’t mean that he won’t start with great players like Williams, Collier, and Filipowski.
Hardy could stick to his guns the way he coaches and keep using his veterans, Mykhailiuk and Mills, to create as much offense as possible. However, he has also favored a 10-player roster, giving the others very few minutes. If he changes, that could mean more time for the others, a deeper lineup, and less experience for the ten as a whole. No matter what, it looks like a great year for the Utah Jazz and every member of the Jazz team.
