The USWNT narrowly beat Japan with a stunner from Trinity Rodman in extra time to see them progress to the semifinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Rodman scored an absolute banger in extra time to crush Japan’s dreams of any silverware, while giving the USWNT the go-ahead goal that would see them earn a spot in the next game.
But, their road to the final is even harder, as they will face off against a tough German squad in the semifinals this upcoming weekend. How will the team fare as they continue their chase for gold in the 2024 Paris Olympics?
USWNT vs. Japan
The USWNT fought back against a tough Japanese opponent in the last game to earn the victory and continue in the competition. Despite missing some key players due to injuries or suspensions, like Sam Coffey on two yellow cards and Tierna Davidson due to a nagging injury, they were able to use the depth of their bench to beat Japan.
Trinity Rodman, at just 22 years old, put the nation on her back and scored a fantastic goal with her left foot that curled around the keeper. Crystal Dunn provided her with a key assist, showing just how lethal she is up in the attacking final third. Even though Japan had just one shot on goal, the USWNT struggled to score — until the final breakthrough.
The USWNT had four shots on target, with 14 shots in total. Japan had only one shot on target that was easily saved by the US’s shot-stopper, Alyssa Naeher, and had 11 in total. The USWNT used a few subs, with Krueger coming on for Emily Fox in the 121st minute, Williams replacing Swanson in the 91st minute, and Nighswonger replacing Lavelle in the midfield at the 106th minute.
USWNT vs. Germany
Looking forward, the USWNT will face off against Germany in the semifinals. They may choose to use some of their other substitutions who didn’t take the field in this last game, like Casey Murphy, Jaedyn Shaw, and Emily Sams. They could also put Coffey back into the midfield to work together with Albert, Horan, and Lavelle to make magic happen going forward.
Hopefully, more goals can come from the energetic and electric front three consisting of Rodman, Swanson, and Pugh, who have combined to score in every game so far. Rodman now has goals in the last two games, tied with Swanson for the most goals in the tournament (with three key ones).
The USWNT vs. Germany is a coveted semifinal match the world can’t wait to see. The USWNT has played the Germans 36 times in the past, winning 24 of the matches, most recently just a few weeks ago when they beat Germany in the current Olympics.
Looking Ahead To Next Game
The last time the USWNT faced off against Germany in the Olympics was back in 2004 in Athens when the USA failed to make the podium in the Games — shocking the world and the US fans. Despite beating Germany 4-1 last week, the Germans are known for their resilience and tough playing style, no doubt hoping to bounce back and beat the USWNT after suffering such a huge loss.
The USWNT will have to keep an eye on Alexandra Popp, one of the most prolific strikers in the game who currently plays for Wolfsburg in the German domestic league. Other players, like Kathrin Hendrich, Sara Doorsoun, and Gwinn, are all talented, veteran defenders who have amassed 50+ caps for their national team.
Germany’s experience and scoring prowess will make them a difficult opponent for the USWNT. Can the US team win under the guidance of Emma Hayes, or will the Germans pull off a major upset in the Olympics? This will be a great game.
