So far, USU women’s volleyball has been doing fantastic. But now they will be taking on a whole new challenge. USU will be going up against a trio of in-state rivals. The first of which will be the 19th-ranked BYU in Provo. Next, they will be hosting Utah Valley at the Logan Dee Glen Smith Spectrum and finishing up with Weber State over the weekend. For the fortunate, the BYU and Weber games will be streamed on ESPN+, while the Utah Valley match can be streamed on the Mountain West Network. These three games will be enough of a challenge for any team.
USU Has Another Trio Of Hard Games
It’s The Aggies Against The World
USU will face the Cougars in the next few days for the 60th time. In the history between the two, BYU has the better record, with 43 over 16 in their favor. The Aggies have had a long, hard losing streak of 29 games against the Cougars that goes back to the year 2000. Since that time, USU has gone 7-8 against them, and the Aggies have won their past three encounters.
Weber State is another matter entirely. The Aggies are 39-22 against them, including 16-11 in Utah Valley territory. The Utah Valley Wildcats have won the last three in their series before USU beat them in the last two final series meetings.
USU was about the same when they met with Utah Valley, with a record of 13-10, and has beaten them in their last two encounters. Also, in the last six matches of the series, USU has won their first six matches of the series until UVU has beaten the Aggies in 10 out of the last 15 meetings. The last time they took the win was three years ago. USU does have a great home-field record against them, with 8-4 over the Wolverines.
How USU Has Done On Their Last Trio
Over the last few days, USU has gone 1-2 in the last trio match when they went to Los Angeles. USC is 23rd ranked and beats the Aggies and LMU. USU was able to beat Ohio with a 3-2 set. It looked like USU was going to lose all three matches as they trailed in the fifth set, 7-1, and later 14-10 against Ohio. The Aggies returned victorious, scoring six straight points and winning the game.
These upcoming games will be difficult for USU as they will be going up against higher-ranked teams. They have already played Purdue and USC, which are ranked 6th and 21st in the most up-to-date polls. In USU’s history of facing high-ranked teams since 1982, they have only won 13 times. The last time they won was two years ago.
The USU Freshman Are Almost Unstoppable
When USU faced off against 8th-ranked Purdue on their home court, freshman Loryn Helgesen led in attacks with 12 kills out of 19 attempts. Loryn had a hitting percentage of almost half in the match and has been the highest for the Aggies this season, adding ten kills. Another freshman who performed amazingly for the Aggies is Anrea Simovski, who, on their first game of the season against Green Bay, led the Aggies with 21 kills with just under half hitting percentage. She has the season-high record so far this season with that record and also is the freshman high since 2014.
Luckily, they are not alone, as four different Aggies have been leading in kills for this season. Simovski is the first, and Lawson is just behind her, adding 13 kills after playing Utah. Aggie Adna Mehmedovic and Helgesen are seniors who have led the team in kills three times each. These wonderful players don’t just add the records in kills. Andrea has a record of five served Aces for USU in their recent win over Ohio. She almost broke the Aggie record for aces that was claimed by Beatriz Rodrigues, who served up six aces on Fresno State in early November two years ago.
These youthful wonders will have to do their best and set new records. After these games, the Aggies will face Colorado State on Thursday, the 26th, at Wayne Estes Center. Then, they will play the Wyoming Rams on the 28th, who are currently in first place. These next few games will be a test of metal for the Aggies.
