On Thursday evening, 11th ranked USU soccer went 6-0 at Clyde Field in Orem, Utah. USU defeated Utah Valley, scoring three goals to none. The Aggies haven’t lost yet, as they remain perfect and undefeated. USU junior midfielder Kaitlyn Richins made a statement by getting on the boards when she scored the first goal in the first three minutes. Richins was given the opportunity quickly following a Wolverine foul, and she shot the goal from over 60 yards. The ball bounced once and ricocheted over the fingertips of the Wolverine keeper and into the back of the net. Once they started, they couldn’t be stopped as USU went on scoring two more, not allowing Utah Valley a single goal.

USU head coach Manny Martins said in a press release.

This is a great showing by our team and it’s a sign of our depth. We played so many players. I’m so proud of them because I felt like it was a solid performance from minute one to the 90th minute. We never stopped trying.

It was almost 40 minutes when Kate Christian scored the Aggies’ second goal. Christian almost danced when the ball was deflected toward her 35 yards from the Wolverine goalie. She took control by beating her first defender and dancing with the ball, beginning with her left foot. She kept going around another defender and yet another defender and slicing the ball in front of her right foot. She kicked out from 16 yards toward the far post and scored USU’s second goal.

The Third Nail In The Coffin Goal

The Aggies wouldn’t let up. Just three minutes after Christian scored, she was fed the ball perfectly to let USU score a third time. Freshman Mia Mullenmeister passed the ball perfectly from 25 yards to Christian’s feet. She took a few well-placed touches before taking a well-placed, powerful shot on goal. The keeper was more than the challenge and deflected it.

Freshman Austin Miller charged forward, took control, dribbled around a defender, and shot again. Her shot deflected off another defender and slipped past the goal, giving USU their third goal, Miller’s second for the season, and their final goal of the game.

The rest of the game went scoreless for both sides, and the Aggies took the game 3-0. USU outshot UVU, with the Aggies almost doubling the Wolverine’s attempts 22-13. So far, USU has scored 16 goals this season, and the defense has only let by one. USU goalie Shay Kercher-Pratt with her fourth shutout of the season, and it’s the fifth game leaving opponents without a goal.

USU coach Martins went on to say,

This is a great showing by our team and it’s a sign of our depth. We played so many players. I’m so proud of them because I felt like it was a solid performance from minute one to the 90th minute. Shay is doing great, our game-changers are coming in and scoring goals (and) I couldn’t be more proud of (our team). And we’re still looking to get better. There’s a lot that we can still do.

The Aggies will then play Pacific at 1 p.m. at Chuck & Gloria Bell Field. USU has had a great showing this season with great depth. They haven’t stopped trying and have given fans the happiest of reasons to celebrate.
