It’s no wonder that USU has had a difficult time facing some hard teams. On the 18th, the Aggies traveled to Provo to play 19th-ranked BYU, but unfortunately, they lost 2-3. They hosted Utah Valley the next day and lost 2-3 sets. Next, they faced Weber State, and it appeared they would lose to a rough loss for their third game in a row. Weber started doing everything right, and it seemed that USU was going down after they lost the first two sets. Then, after the intermission, the Aggies started their comeback. USU took over, won sets three and four, and kept the unbelievable score going, with a 6-0 opening run getting the reverse sweep.
USU Reverse Sweep VS Weber State
The night started with both teams playing their third in-state opponent in four days. Both teams began trading points before the Aggies got something going with a 4-0 run. They went up 8-6 early before things started to go wrong. The Aggies went up by three before the Wildcats went on a 4-0 run. Then Weber State did another 4-0 run again and again before winning the set 25-18.
When the second set started, everything went right for Weber State, as they opened up on the Aggies with a 5-1 run. It didn’t take that long, but it did take a lot of fighting for the Aggies to tie the score at 13. However, the Wildcats created some space for themselves, scoring 6 for USU’s 2. The Aggies tried to come back, cutting Weber State’s lead to two. It turned out to be too little too late as the Wildcats took set number two.
After The Break, The Aggies Changed Everything
During the intermission, the Aggies changed their game plan and tactics, coming out with renewed life and energy. USU controlled the game, starting out with an early 6-0 run. They kept that head start against the Wildcats and never let them get any closer to them than 2 points. The Aggies took the third set, keeping them alive for another set with a 25-16 win.
In danger of being eliminated in the fourth set, the Aggies maintained their initiative, keeping an early lead of 9-4. They ran away with the score and never let Weber State get within four points of them. USU ended the set in style with a pair of kills from senior Kaylie Ray and junior Tierney Barlow, who ended the set with 25-17, taking them to the fifth and last set.
Game Stretched To 5th Set
Going into the game’s last set, either team could have won, but the Aggies didn’t just keep the momentum from the last set; they kept the pattern of how they ended it. Freshman Kaylie Kofe started the set with a pair of aces and also kept running, bringing the score stretch to 6-0. It looked like USU would win, and there wasn’t anything Weber State could do. It shows the metal of the Wildcats as they come back, tying the game at 12 each.
The Aggies won, with Ava Napierski becoming a wall by herself and performing a solo block. Ray ended the night with a pair of kills, bringing the game to an end: Aggies 15 and Weber State 12.
Taking the win, head coach Rob Neilson said,
That was really an emotional and mental turnaround for our young group. I don’t know that they were ready for the kind of intensity that Weber State was playing with, and we got run out of the building in those first two sets. It was just an awesome adjustment by them and it’s fun to watch this group grow up together. We’re just going to keep getting better and better and better. We’re finding our character in a lot of different areas of the game, finding our strengths and figuring out what works for us. We just have so many weapons and we have so much talent so even on a night when someone’s not at their best, someone else is able to step up. We definitely saw that tonight.
