Only five days ago, the USU ladies’ soccer team played their first and second games against Hawaii. Their first game on the 15th was against West Coast Conference Pepperdine, Waipahu, Hawaii. They came off the victor, scoring 4 to 0. They have finished their second game this season, and it has been a great start for them. They play both games at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Last season for Utah State was historic as the Aggies won their first-ever Mountain West title, and in their third trip to the NCAA Tournament, they came away victorious, winning the Mountain West Tournament. It was the second-most wins they have ever achieved in a season and the highest in conference wins.
USU Aggie Girls Take It To Hawaii
They have much to live up to this year and are setting a standard with their first two games and a pattern of what could be expected. In their last game, the first 20 minutes of the opening were quiet. Then, the Aggies let Hawaii know why they were champions last season.
3 Goals, 3 Minutes
After 21 minutes of gameplay, USU scored three goals in just three minutes. The first to strike was senior forward Bizzy Arevalo, assisted by junior Tess Werts. After celebrating their first goal, Tess wouldn’t be satisfied with an assist and wouldn’t wait. Defender Kylie Olsen sent Tess a beautiful pass, and with a strike from her right foot, she scored just a minute after her assist.
The other Aggies might have felt gels or wanted a piece of the glory as freshman Ellie Hendrix and Austin Miller teamed up, sending the ball perfectly for Summer Diamond to score their third goal with only 24 minutes of game time passing. Three minutes, three goals—that is almost impossible in any league.
It was a dream start for USU and a nightmare scaring Hawaii. With these two wins, it is the best start to a season they have had since 2017, and its 10th in program history. That isn’t their only action to note.
Who Shinned
Kylie was named to OUTRIGGER Kickoff Tournament MVP, and her teammates Alex, Kaitlyn, Bizzy, and Shay have all earned spots on the All-Tournament Team. Representing a college on a field or court as a starting player takes years of work and commitment. Starters for USU were Shay, Bizzy, Kaylie, Whitney, Tess, Kylie, Summer, Abby, Alysia, Alex and Kaitlyn.
Then there is the story of Shay Kercher-Pratt, a sophomore who started her first collegiate game. She played every minute in the net and saved two shots on goal, not giving Hawaii an inch or hope to breathe.
Utah State endeavored to shoot 21 shots to Hawaii’s 6. Tess attempted four of those, and Miller tried three. Counting their first game, USU averaged an almost ten-to-one shooting average.
What’s Next For USU
The Utah State Aggies will face the eight-seated Texas Tech on Sunday, the 25th. On Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field at noon mtn., these teams will meet for the third time. So far, both teams have been deadlocked, with each winning one and losing one. Let’s see how their first two games will set the stage for game number three and if the Aggies can keep the ball rolling through the posts and into the net.
