USU Ladies Soccer Nationally Ranked

USU

Utah State Women’s soccer team has defeated the reigning Big 12 regional Champions, Texas Tech! Sunday afternoon, USU took on Texas Tech at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field, winning 2-0, improving their winning streak of 3-0. This terrific start comes thanks to Austin Millers’ goal shot that cohered 15 minutes into the game. This was her first appearance on the field as an Aggie, playing as a forward/midfielder. Kaylie Chambers crossed it over to Miller, who scored, followed by another goal by Tess Werts just 27 minutes in. This teamwork and season start has given all Aggie fans something more to cheer for, as well as National ranking.

USU Ladies Can’t Be Stopped

Now that they have won three and been shut out in each game, these Aggies are ranked 19th in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll. Not only is this magical in a sense, but this is the first time that USU has received such a ranking in program history.

USU received 47 votes and is the only team in the Mountain West ranked over BYU and Utah Valley. Not only is the team being recognized, but the players as well. Austin Miller is the reigning Mountain West Freshman of the Week. The sophomore Shay Kercher-Pratt, goalkeeper, was the reigning MW Defensive Player of the Week. Also, Kylie Olsen, a four-year starter and outside back, was awarded the conference’s Defensive POTW.

Who Is Standing Out

They have won these awards, and the hearts of the fans are piqued as the Aggies have outscored their first three opponents by a 9-0 margin. Six players scored with the help of nine teammates, who were credited with at least one assist. Aggie veteran Tess Werts is the lead scorer who has scored three out of those nine goals and one assist. Then there is former Logan High player Bizzy Arevalo, who scored a goal and gave three assists, while Kylie Chambers did her part, adding a goal with two assists. Olsen from Green Canyon gave two assists, while Miller gave one goal and an assist.

These USU ladies outshot their opponents by 52-26, with 25 of 11 shots on the edge of the frame. Not only have they been doing great offensively, but they are a brick wall defensively, as they have shut out nine of their last 11 games going back to last season.

What’s Ahead?

The challenge continues to see if USU can hold out against teams that want nothing but to bring them down as they match up against a pair of in-state Power 4 Conference teams. They will be facing the defending Mountain West Tournament champions, Utah University, followed by their long-time rivals, BYU. Last season, USU lost to UofU, and nothing would please the Cougars, giving them a win.

Next week, USU will travel to Orem to face Utah Valley. The Wolverines also received votes for the Top 25 Poll and, unfortunately, were only two spots down from placing. A win against the Aggies would help them rise and bring USU down.

This is a new era for USU in ranking as they start stronger than they ever have before. If they can maintain this momentum, they will roll over everything that steps on the field against them, giving them a solid place in the national standings.
