USU Soccer Posts 4-0 Win over Air Force

USU earned its second straight shutout victory after their single loss Sunday afternoon at Chuck & Gloria Bell Field. The Aggies picked up a 4-0 win over Air Force to earn three more points in league play, bringing their ranking to 20th in NCAA women’s soccer RPI. Utah State had a difficult time after last week’s loss to Wyoming, followed by a draw on the road with Colorado State. After those two heartbreakers, Colorado College was next, and the Aggies got back on track with a shutout win 6-0. Then, it was time for them to take on the Air Force, and the well-rounded USU Aggies were back in business.

USU Scored Early

In the first 14 minutes, the Aggies scored twice. The first was from senior Forward Bizzy Arevalo. The assist came from senior Midfielder Rine Yonaha, who was bouncing the ball back between forward Kaylie Chambers. Arevalo shot the ball from the top of the box, left side of the net, 18 yards away.

The second goal came in the 21st minute. USU Senior Defender Addy Weichers sent a pass 60 yards through the air to the feet of junior Forward Tess Werts, who beat a defender to deliver a right-footer into the goal to make it 2-0. Utah State wasn’t done yet, as Arevalo kept up the pressure.

Arevalo Wasn’t Finished

Arevalo earned her second straight brace in the 55th minute with her second goal of the contest, receiving a pass down the last line from Werts at the far post to tap in another and extend the lead. The final goal of the afternoon came in the 58th minute when a penalty just outside of the box set up a free kick for Yonaha, who arched a shot around a wall of defenders and into the top left corner of the frame.

USU doubled their lead less than seven minutes later when Tess Werts tracked down a very nice over-the-top corner ball from standout Center-Back Addy Weichers, dribbled inside the 18, took a couple of assertive touches to her right, and beat the AFA keeper near post. It was No. 12’s team-leading eighth goal of the season.

USU essentially destroyed any chance of an AFA comeback by denting the scoreboard twice within the first 13 minutes of the second half. Werts dribbled inside the box in the 55th minute, got to the end line, and found Arevalo at the back post, and the former Logan High standout finished top shelf.

Bizzy Is Back

It was Arevalo’s second brace in as many games as she has regained her outstanding form from earlier this season. No. 2 missed four matches — including the first three in conference play with a hamstring injury. Yonaha provided the exclamation point less than three minutes later on a sublime 19-yard free kick under the crossbar. No. 17 has been very dangerous, taking corner, free, and penalty kicks all season long. After helping Utah State soccer to a dominant win over Air Force, Arevalo was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week.

Arevalo Rewarded For Her Efforts

Against the Tigers, Arevalo had two goals and took three shots, all three of which were on frame. She then took two shots against Air Force, both of which found the back of the net. She did all of this while starting both matches but playing just 80 minutes.

This is the first Mountain West weekly honor of Arevalo’s career. She is the first USU Aggie to earn Mountain West offensive player of the week accolades this season, though five USU players have previously been named the league’s defensive player of the week this season. Utah State will be heading out for its final regular season road trip this week. It plays at UNLV on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 8 p.m. and at Nevada on Sunday, Oct. 27, at 2 p.m.
