USU women’s soccer has done the impossible in winning its fifth straight game. The number 19 Utah State soccer remains undefeated against number 16 BYU on Saturday night at South Field in Provo. Since the season began, USU has won against three ranked teams. This is the third win they have also taken over BYU over the last four years. With this last win, USU has moved up eight places in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 to now number 11, which is the highest ranking in Aggie history. They have never even received a single vote in this poll before this season, and now they sit at 11.
USU Beats BYU And Is Still Undefeated
Saturday, USU wasted little time. Only after seven minutes did junior forward Tess Werts throw in the ball, placing it perfectly for senior forward Bizzy Arevalo to strike out with her right foot, scoring the first goal of the game. USU didn’t have much time to celebrate when the Cougars took advantage of a free kick only three minutes later and placed the ball high in the top right corner of the net.
That was the first time USU had scored this season. In the first half, USU had seven shots on goal, with BYU only trying for three. The rest of the game went on with both teams controlling the ball well when the tie was broken in the 57th minute of the game. Senior midfielder Kaitlyn Richins kicked the ball hard, sending the entire field length up to junior midfielder Kaylie Chambers. Chambers quickly crossed a pass over to Werts, who deflected it past the goalie for the win.
USU Is Now Ranked 19th In The State
USU hadn’t done this well in program history since 2011, when the team had gone all the way to 8-0. Bizzy Arevalo’s goal was the second she has done for the season and the fifth of her career so far. Tess Werts’ goal against BYU was her fourth for the season and her eighth in her career. Arevalo had a team-high five shots on goal, with Werts behind her with four.
This seemingly unstoppable streak for USU over higher-ranked teams Texas Tech, Utah, and BYU. Their rise comes from receiving 118 points when they were voted just 47th the week before. This honor also includes that they are the only Mountain West team who received any votes at all. There is a lot to come through, as Utah State is not the only one getting the votes; upcoming opponents Utah Valley and Grand Canyon have as well.
Tess Werts And Weicher Awarded
As Tess Werts has continued to show her quality as an Aggie, she was recently awarded the American First Credit Union Player of the Week. A state-wide media panel voted on this award, and because of this, Werts will be supported with a student-athlete scholarship.
Werts isn’t the only Aggie to be recognized as a defender. Addy Weichers has been named the Mountain West Defender Player of the Week. Senior Weichers, who came from Highland, Utah, has been almost unstoppable holding the defensive back line. She has played nonstop for the last three games and, with her help, has allowed only five shots on goal over the last seven days.
The next challenges for USU will come as they finish their three-game away trip, playing Utah Valley in Orem. Soon after that, they will be going up against Pacific on their home field in Logan. USU let in a single goal, proving they were vulnerable, but they came back, showing they have the heart to win.
