USA & Pakistan’s Chances of Qualifying For the Super Eight in the T20 World Cup

Group A is made up of five teams: India, Pakistan, the United States, Ireland, and Canada, all competing for a top-two finish. The T20 World Cup 2024 group rounds will conclude with a final series of games in the coming days.

Team India has already qualified for the Super 8 stage with six points. They have a high net-run rate after being undefeated throughout the event. While Canada and Ireland are theoretically still in dispute. Their prospects of qualifying are limited to none due to their low net-run rates. Both teams have upcoming games against India and Pakistan.

The USA and Pakistan, on the other hand, still have a good chance of qualifying for the Super 8s since they each have a game in hand over Ireland in their last group-stage encounter.

Weather Can Effect The Pakistan & USA Selection

The weather may have a significant impact on the United States and Pakistan’s chances of qualifying for the Super 8 stage.

With three games remaining in Group A, the group stages are shaping up to be an exciting conclusion. However, there are rumors of a strong likelihood of rain for the upcoming games in Lauderhill, Florida. Southern Florida was pummeled with thunderstorms on Wednesday. It prompts the declaration of a state of emergency in many counties. This includes Broward County, home to the Cricket Stadium.

According to the National Weather Service, numerous regions of the county saw “life-threatening flooding.” Broward and Miami-Dade counties received more than ten inches of rain on Wednesday alone.

Qualification Scenarios for USA and Pakistan

The United States will face Ireland on Friday, June 14, followed by Canada vs India on Saturday, June 15, and Pakistan vs Ireland on Sunday, June 16.

To put it simply, if the game between the USA and Ireland results in a USA win, it will bestow the USA with 2 points. But if this game is rain-out, the USA will get 1 point. Ultimately, the USA will qualify for the Super Eights.

However, if the US loses against Ireland, Pakistan will just need to win their next match against Ireland. This will move them four points ahead of the USA in the group rankings due to a higher Net Run Rate (NRR).

What happens if rain stops the USA-Ireland match? If play is impossible due to rain, the match will be called off, and the sides will have to divide the points. In such a situation, the United States will advance to the Super 8s with five points, eliminating Pakistan from the World Cup.

To summarize, Pakistan will know a day in advance if they are eliminated (USA victory or USA-Ireland rain washout) or whether their chances of qualification are totally in their control (if the USA loses to Ireland).

Can the ICC Move the T20 Matches Out of Florida?

Some cricket enthusiasts on social media have speculated about this subject and urged that the ICC move the forthcoming three World Cup matches from Florida owing to the high risk of rain. Is it possible?

Unfortunately, the ICC is unlikely to make such a move. Shifting venues on such short notice is difficult, if not impossible. Furthermore, the practicalities of making such a change in the middle of a tournament that had been prepared months in advance would be extremely difficult.
