USA Cricket Faces Potential ICC Sanctions, Have Rising Concerns

USA Cricket

USA Cricket (USAC), was cautioned by ICC that it might face penalties. The reason for facing it is, not completing the requirements of its Associate membership status. This warning came just a month after the USA hosted a part of the ICC global event, its first-ever hosting. They were Co-hosting the T20 World Cup with the West Indies in June. The event took place at three stadiums. It was part of the plan to spread the game throughout North America.

USAC Violating Rules and Regulations

However, the challenge of this goal is highlighted by the warning, which indicates USAC might be violating its membership requirements in two areas. Firstly, their system has not completed the governance standards set by the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), which are important for achieving National Governing Body (NGB) status. This status is very important for all sports added to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Other than that, the ICC has pointed out the mistakes in the system for not having a proper administrative structure. Including failing to bring in another CEO, who is good at this job and can fulfill the requirements, after dismissing the previous CEO just months into the job.

“USA Cricket is currently Non-compliant with ICC Associate Member Membership Criteria 2.2(b)(i) (governance structure) and 2.2 (b)(ii) (administrative and executive structure) and is at risk of being placed ‘On Notice’,” the ICC said in a note sent recently to all its members.

ICC Board’s Meeting in Dubai

USA: ICC Board’s Meeting in Dubai

Including all these reasons ICC has warned them for the second time this year for its mistakes. Following its meetings in March, the ICC sent a letter that had many questions. Those questions included that USAC was not doing well, towards becoming a good land for cricket to grow. The ICC also wrote about the ongoing issue of not having a CEO since Dr. Noor Mohammad Murad was allowed to go. And they failed to appoint an independent director to its Board.

An Email was sent by ICC CEO Geoff Allardice six days after the ICC Board’s meeting in Dubai. It was sent directly to Venu Piske, who is the chairman of the USAC. He started working on his role in July 2023. The ICC Board knew that the land of the USA was really important for cricket to grow in other countries as well. Allardice also mentioned in this e-mail the problems faced by the system overseas for a long time in the field of cricket.

Qualified CEO for the USAC

The search for a new CEO has started. In April, the Development Manager and Women’s Manager both resigned. Normally the search for new people is started very soon but it was not the case here. Right now temporary people are there, working on their behalf and fulfilling needs.

“It is Management’s view that USAC has not remedied all areas of non-compliance as outlined in the ICC’s letter to USAC dated 21 March 2024, and is therefore at risk of being placed ‘On Notice’.”

They replied on July 12, they again and again informed the ICC that they had appointed Pintoo Shah as an independent director, who also assumed the role of Treasurer. His appointment was officially approved by the USAC Board on the same day. They explained that the delay in filling this independent role was because they were adjusting their constitution to work with USOPC regulations. Regarding the open CEO role, they reported that it received multiple applications after advertising the position in April and has selected some candidates. It’s anticipated that the new USAC CEO will be appointed right after the ICC AGM.
