Carlos Alcaraz - 2024 Davis Cup Finals Group Stage in Valencia, Czechia v Spain

The United States overcame its first tough actions at the Davis Cup Finals group stage. Spain joined the United States, defending champion Italy, and Britain in gaining victories on Wednesday.

The US team can overcome tough resistance from Chile with a 3-0 victory. Reilly Opelka started the US Davis Cup team win after defeating Cristian Garin 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (3). Brandon Nakashima beat Alejandro Tabilo 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-6 (3) to give the Americans a winning 2-0 lead over Chile in Group C in Zhuhai, China.

Those two singles matches lasted more than five hours. Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram defeated Tomas Barrios Vera and Matias Soto 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3). All of the victories went to the third-set breaker. Seeing this kind of struggle, US team captain Bob Bryan felt nothing but pride.

Defending champion Italy also marked a positive result as they took a winning lead against Brazil. The absence of Italian star and the world number one, Jannik Sinner, has led Italy to begin its title defense with a 2-1 win over Brazil in Group A in Bologna. Britain had the same victory over Finland in Group D in Manchester.

Two victories for Italy were from Matteo Berrettini who beat Joao Fonseca 6-1, 7-6 (5), and Matteo Arnaldi who won against Thiago Monteiro 7-5, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5). Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori were lost in three sets doubles battle. The same victorious win for Britain came from singles matches also, thanks to Dan Evans and Billy Harris.

Only Spain Davis Cup Team Had a Star Player

The only tennis star who led his country to win the first match is the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. Despite having a slow start, the world number 3 could take his country to wrap up a 3-0 victory against the Czech Republic in Group B. Playing on single and double matches, Alcaraz is finally back since his loss in straight sets to Botic van de Zandschulp at Flushing Meadows.

Alcaraz clinched his first victory when Tomas Machac retired injured with the score at 6-7 (3), 6-1, in Valencia. The result gave Spain a 2-0 lead. Roberto Bautista defeated Jiri Lehecka 7-6 (1), 6-4 in the first match. Alcaraz then partnered with Marcel Granollers-Pujol to win the doubles in three sets to wrap up a 3-0 victory.

The US Team Chance to be on the Davis Cup Quarterfinal

Four groups are playing in four cities this week and fight for tickets to the Final 8 knockout stage. This stage will be held in Malaga, Spain, in November. The top two countries in each flour-team group will advance. The US team joined Group C with Germany, Slovakia, and Chile. Bob Bryan’s team now sits in second place in the group standings. Germany is the leader on the board after clinching the 3-0 win against Slovakia – the country the US team will face in the second match that will be held next Friday.

The US team holds the record as the leading 32 Davis Cup titles. But the American team has had none since 2007. Bob Bryan and friends are bidding to reach the quarterfinals for the second time since the Davis Cup Finals were introduced in 2019.
