Madrid Open

Madrid Open continued on the 28th of April with blockbuster mouthwatering clashes that lived up to their billings.

Among the top 12 top seeded players in the tournament, Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune, Andrey Rublev, Taylor Fritz, and Hubert Hurkacz were in action earlier in the day with Alexander Zverev billed to feature later.

This same tournament has already served the fans with some emotional moments, like the Rafael Nadal win over Alex De Minaur and Daniil Medvedev’s come back win over Matteo Arnaldi.

Exciting Upset Win In Madrid

Holger Rune Madrid Open

World number 12, Holger Rune took on the world number 25, Tallon Griekspoor, in a cracker of a match. The match started as fiery as expected with both players maintaining serve until Tallon Griekspoor broke Holger Rune’s serve in the 10th game of the set to take the set.

The Danish youngster came out in the second set guns blazing as he took an early break which he maintained to win the set 6-4.

But the third and deciding set was the exact opposite for Rune. An overhead shot from Rune into the net gave Griekspoor the early break and with the Dutchman smelling blood, he kept attacking. The match lasted two hours and 14 minutes and was Griekspoor’s first victory over a Top 20 player on clay.

The game between Carlos Alcaraz, fondly called Carlito, and Thiago Seyboth Wild went according to the script as the world number three ran over the world number 63 in straight sets in the Manolo Santana court of the La Caja Mágica stadium in Madrid.

The match had a close start with Thiago putting up a fight against the 21-year-old Spanish superstar, but everything flipped in the seventh game of the first set where Alcaraz got his first break of Thiago’s serve. Another break of serve in the ninth game saw him see out the set comfortably.

The second set started the way the first set ended, with Alcaraz breaking Thiago’s serve early in the set to take a 2-0 lead. Another break of serve and a comfortable hold of his serve and Alcaraz was 5-0 up in the second set.

Thiago won his first game of the second set in the sixth game of the set before stunning Alcaraz to break his serve in the next game. But it wasn’t enough as Alcaraz comfortably served out the set and the match to remain on track to win the Madrid Open for the third consecutive time.

As earlier stated, there were five of the top 12 seeded players for the tournament who were involved in the Madrid Open today. Aside from Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune, Andrey Rublev took on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Hubert Hurkacz took on Daniel Altmaier, and Taylor Fritz clashed with Sebastian Baez.

The American number one, Taylor Fritz, enjoyed a routine 6-2, 6-3 win over the Argentine, while Andrey Rublev’s match wasn’t so straightforward. His clash with the Spaniard needed a 12-10 tie-break in the first set to find a winner. In the end, Rublev took both sets to book a match against Tallon Griekspoor.

Other exciting wins in the Madrid Open included Hubert Hurkacz’s 6-4, 7-6 win over Daniel Altmaier and Jan-Lennard Struff’s one hour and 38 minutes win over Ugo Humbert, a match in which he didn’t face a single break point.
