Top 25 Ranked UNLV Loses Starting QB to NIL Dispute

Two years ago, Jaden Rashada signed with the University of Florida based on NIL payment promises. Once he realized those promises were hollow and would never be paid out, he transferred. Now, UNLV starting quarterback Matthew Sluka has announced he will be leaving the program mid-season due to a failure to fulfill promises made to him.

Sluka had led the Rebels to a 3-0 start and UNLV even made a jump in this week’s Coaches Poll to number 23. Hoping to make the College Football Playoff as the Group of 5 representative, the loss of their star quarterback will likely have lasting effects. Sluka had transferred to UNLV in the offseason from Holy Cross.

Late on Tuesday night, former UNLV QB Matthew Sluka announced he would be utilizing his redshirt year and not playing anymore this season with the idea of transferring after the season. He claimed he committed to the school because of promises that were made to him. However, those promises were not held and after discussions, it became clear they would not be held.

Pete Thamel of ESPN received word from Sluka’s representation, claiming the quarterback was verbally promised at least $100,000 from an assistant coach in return for his commitment. Marcus Cormartie of Equity Sports told ESPN that none of that money was paid. According to Cormartie, UNLV’s NIL collective never made an effort to formalize a contract with Sluka. The only money Matthew Sluka received was a $3,000 relocation stipend.

UNLV Claims Sluka Wanted More NIL Money

Carl Reed Jr. of 247Sports reported sources told him all financial commitments were met and Matthew Sluka’s family hired an agent after UNLV’s 3-0 start. His sources said Sluka wanted more money after he felt his market value had increased.

In comments to Adam Rittenberg of ESPN, Bob Sluka (Matthew’s father), claims in a September 19th call, UNLV told Cormartie that Sluka would not receive anymore than the relocation stipend.

“We did not ask for a single dollar [more].”

Final Thoughts

After more details have emerged, it really feels like the UNLV assistant coach made promises to Matthew Sluka that he either didn’t plan on keeping or had no way of keeping. With college football becoming more and more of a business for athletes, it’s easier to see these situations from the players point of view. This is not a good look for the UNLV program and could potentially be detrimental to their future for not only this season, but also moving forward.
