According to the resolution, this day commemorates the 100th anniversary of the first-ever international football tournament in history.
This tournament took place on May 25, 1924, during the Summer Olympic Games held in Paris. It included the participation of all regions in the world.
United Nations have Declared May 25 as World Football Day
The United Nations General Assembly, consisting of 193 members, passed the resolution with a resounding gavel strike from its president, Dennis Francis. The diplomats in the assembly chamber responded with enthusiastic applause. Over 160 countries came together to co-sponsor the gathering. The resolution was presented by Taher El-Sonni, Libya’s United Nations ambassador. He told the assembly:
“Football or soccer as others call it, is the number one game played and followed around the globe.”
He emphasized that football goes beyond being a mere game, as it is played by people of all ages in various settings, including streets, villages, schools, and outdoor areas, both for enjoyment and in competitive matches. El-Sonni expressed that due to its “unparalleled position” in the realm of sports, he said:
“Football serves as a universal language spoken across the globe, cutting across national, cultural and socio-economic barriers.”
According to him, the game has evolved into “a pivotal platform” that supports gender equality and social inclusion. It serves as
“a common ground where individuals from varying backgrounds converge, promoting mutual understanding, tolerance, respect and solidarity.” The resolution acknowledges: “the global reach of football and its impact in various spheres, including commerce, peace and diplomacy, and recognizing that football creates a space for cooperation.”
It also acknowledges “the fundamental role” of FIFA, which is in charge of football around the world, as well as the important role that regional and national football federations and related associations play in promoting the game.
The resolution emphasizes the importance of countries uniting behind football and other sports as a means to foster peace, development, and the empowerment of women and girls. Furthermore, it motivates nations to implement policies and initiatives that foster football and various sports as well as physical activities.
May 25 marks a significant day on the calendar, as nations, United Nations bodies, international organizations, academia, civil society, and the private sector are all encouraged to come together and celebrate World Football Day. This resolution emphasizes the importance of promoting the benefits of football for everyone and encourages the dissemination of these advantages through educational and public awareness activities.
