Anson Dorrance Retires as UNC Coach After 2 Decades

If you have never heard of the name ‘Anson Dorrance,’ chances are you have never watched or heard of women’s collegiate soccer in the United States. UNC is the ultimate powerhouse of college soccer, claiming a record number of NCAA titles and churning out some of the best professional players in the world, such as Mia Hamm, Heather O’Reilly, Cindy Parlow, and Alessia Russo.

The man behind the magic is none other than Dorrance, a long-term coach who has become a legend of the game. Despite getting older, he stuck with the collegiate team, never changing to a professional side or going elsewhere, like clubs in Europe. His commitment, dedication, and elite mentality have made him and his team at UNC consistently ranked among the best every single year.

However, the era of Dorrance at UNC is now over, as he is retiring from being the head coach after more than two decades at Chapel Hill. What now?

Dorrance has a lot to be proud of. He won 21 NCAA Championships as the head coach of UNC Women’s Soccer, which is by far the most of any head coach at a DI sport in all of college sporting history. He is retiring after a whopping 45 seasons of being in charge of the women’s program at the elite North Carolina school.

Dorrance told the Athletic Director just two days ago that he was retiring, less than one week before the team’s opener at Denver. Not only was this a shock to the soccer world, but it was a huge shock to the players at UNC who committed to the school thinking that this historic and legendary coach would be there for at least one year.

Now, the UNC women’s soccer team will be coached by the Assistant coach, Damon Nahas, who is stepping in as the interim coach. Cunningham, the school’s AD, will be on the lookout for a new manager who can come in and take over as soon as possible.

But the players can’t be too surprised or too mad at Dorrance. He is 73 years old and has committed 45 years of his life to making UNC the incredible soccer powerhouse that it is today. He has shaped dozens, if not hundreds, of professional players’ lives after college, helping them get into great teams abroad in Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America.

UNC Record

As the first and only coach of UNC since the program’s inception, Dorrance has led the school to an incredible 934-88-53 record in 45 seasons on the job. During his tenure as coach, he also led the team to 21 NCAA titles and one AIAW title in 1981, along with making the national championships an additional six times.

Dorrance’s 934 wins are the most in collegiate history for women’s soccer. The UNC team now goes into the upcoming season having been ranked among the top schools in the nation for 500+ consecutive weeks.
