Umar Nurmagomedov is still the undefeated Champion of the UFC Bantamweight division. He recently fought one of his hard opponents, who was a massive threat to his title shot. But Umar did not let his record be broken by this fight, and he completely dominated Cory Sandhagen, who stood in his way. As the Dagistani UFC fighters are known for their Grappling skills, Nurmagomedov did not let those expectations down, and his grappling played a massive role in his win against Cory. As with every other Champion of history, Umar Nurmagomedov is also looking forward to fighting against the current Champion who is holding the title shot.
Cory Sandhagen Being a Hard Opponent
Being a UFC fighter, it’s all about your technical skills and how you execute them against your opponent. Cory Sandhagen showed a beautiful representation of his skills, as he worked on his grappling skills and proved himself to millions of people but the opponent was not someone to be taken lightly. He gave a hard time to Umar Nurmagomedov and as a result of the fight was taken to a five-round match.
At some points, we were not sure if Umar would win or not because Cory completely dominated some moments through his striking, But Nurmagomedov always has a plan B and this time he had a lot of them. Against the grappling and striking of Cory Sandhagen, he had an impressive comeback through his boxing and wrestling skills and relentless stamina that didn’t let Nurmagomedov down.
But afterward, Umar showed what he was trained for and bombarded punches on Sandhagen as they moved deep into the fight. The unstoppable punches dominated Cory and he couldn’t do anything but focus on his defense rather than offense. But at last, Umar Nurmagomedov remained the undefeated champion by the scores 50-45, 49-46, and 49-46 winning by a unanimous decision.
Cory Being More than Expected
Normally, these undefeated champions defeat and knock out their opponents in the first round of the fight, but Cory lasted longer than expected. His bravery against Umar Nurmagomedov was also appreciated by the Champion himself. He expressed his respect toward Cory and his skills, and he also didn’t expect a lot from Cory, but he turned out to be a very competitive champion. “He was tougher than I expected” and “This guy is really tough” were the words used by Umar Nurmagomedov himself to show respect towards his opponent.
Nurmagomedov also explained how things were going against Cory in each single round. According to him, he dominated every single round and didn’t let him strike a lot, and that’s why he spent most of the time in defense and couldn’t land good punches.
Cory Sandhagen Remarks After Fight
It was all planned by Umar Nurmagomedov to understand the striking and defense of his opponent and take him down when he had a chance, and that’s why he believes that he is the one champion to hold the Bantamweight Title. “I think I deserve the win today. I feel like I beat him in every single round. I tried to take him down, but he had good defense. I have to believe in my striking. From the second round, I [was] beginning to feel I can beat him in striking, too.”
Cory did not say a lot of things after the fight, but he showed respect to Umar Nurmagomedov and knew that he was a really good opponent. There was no chance that he could’ve won against that beast, but he tried his best to do so. “He’s real good. I knew he was going to be real good. He beat me tonight. There’s nothing more I can say about it. Congrats to him. He’s going to fight for the belt next. He’ll probably win, and then I’ll catch up to him and fight him again.”
