DooHo Choi has lost a lot of the momentum he once had in the UFC featherweight division but remains one of the most popular fighters in MMA ahead of his matchup with Bill Algeo at UFC Vegas 94. Though he still is widely recognized as ‘The Korean Superboy,’ Choi celebrated his 33rd birthday in April and will seek his first win since 2016 on July 20. Following a three-year-long hiatus, Choi returned to the Octagon in February 2023 in a draw with Kyle Nelson and has gone another year without fighting.

DooHo Choi’s Last Fight
In his first fight back from a three-year layoff, Choi shook off the rust in his matchup with Kyle Nelson at UFC Vegas 68. Injuries were to blame for part of his time off but his lengthy absence was primarily due to the mandatory military service enforced on him by the South Korean government. Choi’s close friend and mentor, Chan Sung Jung — better known as ‘The Korean Zombie’ — dealt with a similar situation in 2014.
In the fight, Choi certainly had to shake off some rust, even admitting after the fight that it took a while to allow his body to re-adjust to fighting. The Korean would eventually get his striking going and push a pace on Nelson but was constantly taken down by the bigger fighter throughout the 15-minute contest. In the final round, Choi was deducted a point by the referee for a headbutt, causing the fight to be scored a draw.
The inconclusive result dissatisfied everyone including UFC CEO Dana White, who reportedly paid Choi his win money regardless of the official decision. The draw ended a three-fight losing streak for the fighter though he has still not been able to pick up a win since knocking out Thiago Tavares in 2016.
Bill Algeo’s Last Fight
Coincidentally, Algeo’s last outing was also against Kyle Nelson, though more recently and with a different outcome. ‘Señor Perfecto’ entered the bout at UFC Atlantic City on a small two-fight win streak but had his momentum abruptly halted with a controversial stoppage in the first round.
Nelson almost immediately hurt Algeo with a right overhand and continued to pour on the pressure, eventually causing the referee to stop the fight at 4:00 of the opening round. With Algeo being the crowd favorite, fans immediately booed the result given that their fighter did not even go down despite being visibly compromised. Before the loss to Nelson, Algeo earned his fifth win in the UFC against Alexander Hernandez at UFC Vegas 80.

Throughout his UFC career, DooHo Choi has consistently been a fighter who looks to engage in an all-out brawl and is willing to live or die by that decision. The strategy worked early on for the Korean prodigy with three knockout wins to begin his promotional run but faltered once he reached the top of the division. After a battle with Cub Swanson at UFC 206 he has since been inducted into the Hall of Fame, Choi would be knocked out twice by Jeremy Stephens and Charles Jourdain.
Even in his defeats, Choi’s three losses were recognized as the Fight of the Night. Algeo is no stranger to a performance bonus himself, winning three $50,000 checks in his nine fights with the organization. With both men preferring to press forward and initiate close-quarter exchanges, another Fight of the Night could be on the horizon for both men.
Choi has tended to get himself into trouble by exchanging with power punchers in the pocket, with all three of his recent losses as a result of that tactic. Algeo has knocked down both Alexander Hernandez and TJ Brown in his two most recent wins but has not won by knockout since Herbert Burns tapped out to exhaustion in 2022. Before that, Algeo’s last legitimate knockout win was at the Ring of Combat in 2018.
