UFC Vegas 95: Marcin Tybura vs. Serghei Spivac 2 Fight Preview

UFC

UFC Las Vegas 95 will occur on Saturday, August 10th, with eight-ranked Marcin Tybura and ninth-ranked Serghei Spivac facing off at the UFC’s APEX arena. The two notable heavyweights will face each other for the second time since 2020. That fight became an important moment in their careers in different ways.

Marcin Tybura used the unanimous decision win versus Spivac to kick off a 7-1 eight-fight stint before falling to Tom Aspinall (who is now interim champion). Serghei Spivac began his UFC career 1-2 after his loss to Tybura. However, that loss seemed to turn him into the best version of himself. Spivac began a tear in which he went 6-2 in his next eight fights, falling only to Tom Aspinall and Ciryl Gane, future and former interim heavyweight champions respectively. With Spivac’s growth and Tybura’s consistency, it was only a matter of time before they met again.

Marcin Tybura’s Last Fight

Marcin Tybura’s last Octagon appearance ended with a decisive victory over the entertaining Tai Tuivasa, thanks to a first-round rear-naked choke. Tuivasa managed to connect on 18 of his 27 total strikes and cut Tybura on the head early. Although Tybura was far more active once he took the fight to the ground, landing 73 out of 96 strikes overall.

In terms of significant strikes, Tuivasa was accurate, landing 15 out of 24 for a 62% success rate. Most of his strikes targeted Tybura’s head, where he connected on 9 out of 17 attempts. Tybura was more efficient, landing 27 out of 41 significant strikes at a 65% rate, with 23 landing on Tuivasa’s head. Tuivasa delivered 53% of his significant strikes from distance, displaying his preference for range. Tybura favored close-quarters combat, with only 29% of his significant strikes thrown from a distance.

‘Tybur’ demonstrated exactly how talented and dominant he can be on the ground against an inferior mixed martial artist.” Marcin entered the fight as a betting underdog rebounding from a knockout loss from Tom Aspinall, proving he did not lose a step in the UFC hierarchy.

Serghei Spivac’s last UFC outing saw him face Ciryl Gane, where he was barraged all contest, eventually losing in the second round by a headshot knockout. Gane was highly accurate, landing 96% of his significant strikes from distance, while Spivac was limited, though flawless, in this aspect.

Despite his perfect distance striking, Spivac struggled overall, landing only 11 out of 44 significant strikes, with just 7 of 38 aimed at Gane’s head hitting the mark. In contrast, Gane delivered a dominant performance, connecting on 109 out of 156 significant strikes, including 48 of 85 to Spivac’s head. When considering all strikes thrown, Gane landed 110 out of 157, while Spivac managed to connect on just 11 out of 44 attempts.

Serghei Spivac looks to recover his “rising UFC contender” pedigree after a poor performance against one of the most talented heavyweights in UFC history. At just 29 years of age, Spivac looks to continue his growth.

What To Expect UFC’s Marcin Tybura vs. Serghei Spivac 2

With Tybura and Spivac’s 2020 bout now being four years ago, it is safe to say the fight will look different. At the time, Tybura appeared as the superior striker and grappler. ‘Tybur’ landed 76 more total strikes and eight minutes of ground control time, displaying to the young ‘Polar Bear’ what a complete MMA fighter looked like. In 2024, it is unlikely Tybura can still out-strike Spivac over a five-round fight at 38 years old. However, Tybura is certainly the favorite once they hit the mat.

Expect Serghei Spivac to do his best to keep the fight standing, prepared to defend the takedown from the beginning. If Tybura can get the fight on the ground, he will be searching for favorable mounts to implement ground and pound or apply submission attempts. Much like their first UFC fight, the judges’ scorecards can certainly come into play.
